Is it permissible to take antidepressants or other psychiatric medication?

There is nothing in Islamic teaching that prohibits taking antidepressants or other prescribed psychiatric medication when a qualified doctor recommends them; treating illness, whether of the body or the mind, is consistently encouraged rather than discouraged. Like any medication, the same general rulings apply — if a particular formulation contains alcohol or another questionable ingredient, that falls under the standard principle that necessity in genuine medical treatment permits what would otherwise be avoided, especially when no equally effective alternative exists. What matters most practically is following medical guidance closely: taking the medication as prescribed, not stopping abruptly without a doctor's supervision (which can cause serious withdrawal effects), and being honest with your physician about any religious or personal concerns so they can be addressed together. Faith-based coping and professional psychiatric treatment are not competing paths; many people find that stability from medication makes it easier, not harder, to engage in prayer, worship, and daily life.
