Q&A · Marriage & Divorce

Does Islam prefer arranged marriage or love marriage?

Islam does not mandate one model over the other; it cares about the substance of consent, compatibility, and good character far more than the mechanism by which two people meet. Historically, family-arranged introductions were the norm, and they remain valued because parents and relatives can vet character, family background, and intentions that a couple might overlook amid attraction. At the same time, nothing in Islamic law forbids two people getting to know each other through more independent means, including a mutual attraction that develops into a proposal, provided their interactions stay within the bounds of modesty and are not a substitute for a proper engagement and contract. The Quran's description of spouses as sources of love and tranquility for each other shows that affection is a valued, even necessary, ingredient of marriage rather than something to be suspicious of. What Islam consistently insists on, regardless of how the couple met, is genuine, uncoerced consent from both parties, involvement of family where appropriate, and a formal nikah once the decision is made — arranged and self-initiated marriages are simply two legitimate paths to the same lawful destination.
