What are the conditions and limits Islam places on polygyny?

Islam permits a man to marry up to four wives simultaneously, but this permission comes bound with strict conditions, not as an open license. The Quran allows marrying "two, three, or four" only if a man is confident he will deal justly between them, immediately warning that "if you fear you will not be just, then only one" (4:3) - directing most men, in practice, toward monogamy. Justice here covers concrete, verifiable matters: equal time, equal housing, and equal material provision, though the Quran itself acknowledges that perfect equality of the heart's affection is not humanly achievable (4:129), so emotional feelings are not held to the same standard as material fairness. Each wife retains her own full rights - her own mahr, her own residence, and her own share of time and maintenance - and existing wives' comfort, while not legally required for validity by every school, is considered important for family harmony. Many contemporary scholars note the practice arose historically in contexts of war, widowhood, and orphan care, and stress that failing to meet its conditions is a serious wrong, not a mere technicality.
