Q&A · New Muslim

I feel really lonely and isolated since converting — is that normal, and what can I do?

It's very normal, and you're far from the only convert who has felt this way — leaving behind old social rhythms while not yet feeling fully embedded in a new community creates a real gap, and that gap can genuinely ache. Be proactive about closing it: show up consistently to the same mosque rather than mosque-hopping, join a new-Muslim class or convert support group if one exists locally or online, and don't be afraid to be the one who initiates conversation after prayers. Many cities have converts' WhatsApp or Discord groups that can offer instant camaraderie with people who understand exactly what you're navigating. On the harder days, remember that the loneliness is often temporary and circumstantial, not a sign anything is wrong with your decision — Allah reminds us that hearts find genuine rest in His remembrance, which can be a steady anchor even when human company feels thin. Keep nurturing whatever non-Muslim relationships remain healthy for you too; you don't have to cut everyone off to belong here. Community takes time to build — give it a real chance before concluding it isn't coming.
