Q&A · Repentance & Sin

How do good deeds help erase the effects of past sins?

Good deeds function almost like a spiritual counterweight to sin. Allah tells the Prophet, 'And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds' (11:114) — a direct promise that righteous actions actively work against the residue sin leaves on the heart and record. The Prophet made this even more concrete: 'Fear Allah wherever you are, and follow a bad deed with a good deed which will wipe it out, and treat people with good character' (Tirmidhi 1987). This doesn't mean sins can simply be 'bought off' without genuine repentance — the good deed matters most when it flows from real regret and a desire to turn back to Allah, not as a loophole. But it does mean the path forward after a sin isn't just standing still in guilt; it's actively filling your days with prayer, charity, kindness, and remembrance of Allah. Every such deed chips away at the weight of what came before, and over time can transform a person's entire record and character.
