Who is Iblis, and how does Shaytan's role relate to human free will?

Iblis was a jinn who worshipped alongside the angels but refused Allah's command to prostrate before newly created Adam, out of arrogance, claiming superiority since he was made of fire and Adam of clay. For this act of disobedience he was expelled from Allah's mercy and, by his own request, was granted a reprieve until the Day of Judgment to try to mislead humankind. From then on, "Shaytan" refers both to Iblis and to the rebellious jinn and forces that follow his path, whispering doubt, temptation, and false promises into human hearts. Crucially, Islamic teaching insists Shaytan has no power to force anyone into sin—he can only suggest, deceive, and beautify wrongdoing; the choice to follow or resist remains with the individual. The Quran describes Shaytan on the Day of Judgment disowning his followers, saying he only invited them and they responded freely, so they have no right to blame him. This underlines a core belief: humans possess genuine free will and moral responsibility, and blaming Shaytan does not remove one's own accountability for the choices one makes.
