Q&A · Prayer

What should the congregation do if the imam makes a mistake in recitation or actions during prayer?

Mistakes happen even to experienced imams, and Islam provides a simple way to correct them without disrupting the prayer. If the imam forgets what comes next, skips something, or clearly errs in reciting Quran in a way that changes its meaning, the Prophet taught that men should alert him by saying 'Subhan Allah' (Glory be to Allah), while women should signal by clapping their hands (Sahih al-Bukhari 1203). If someone behind the imam knows the correct recitation, gently prompting the correct word is generally considered helpful rather than a distraction, and most scholars hold the prayer remains valid throughout. As for mispronunciation, scholars distinguish between slips that do not alter meaning — a mistake in accent or a minor grammatical vowel change, for instance — which most jurists (particularly the Hanafi school) treat leniently, and errors that genuinely distort the meaning of a verse, which stricter schools such as the Shafi'is hold can affect the validity of the imam's own prayer if left uncorrected and known. If the imam cannot recall the correct wording despite prompting, he may move on, skip to another passage, or perform sujud al-sahw as needed.
