What is the intercession (shafa'ah) of the Prophet ﷺ on the Day of Judgment?

On the Day of Judgment, humanity will stand for a long, anguished wait for Allah's judgment to begin. In one narration, people go from prophet to prophet asking each to intercede and begin the proceedings, until they reach the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who agrees and is granted what the Quran calls 'a praised station' (maqam mahmud, 17:79) — a unique honor among all of creation. Beyond that opening intercession, Islamic teaching describes the Prophet ﷺ interceding specifically for members of his own ummah, including — by Allah's permission — those who committed serious sins in their lifetime, asking that they be forgiven or removed from the Fire and admitted to Paradise. This is a deeply hopeful teaching for anyone who feels weighed down by their own failures: no one is interceding on behalf of the perfect, because none of us are. All intercession happens strictly by Allah's permission — 'Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?' (2:255) — so it is never a bypass around Allah's justice, but an expression of His mercy, channeled through the person He loves most. Many Muslims send frequent salawat (blessings) upon the Prophet ﷺ, hoping to be recognized and included in his intercession.
