How should a Muslim approach using social media?

Social media magnifies the same responsibilities Islam has always placed on speech and behavior, simply moving them online. The Quran reminds believers that "not a word does he utter except that with him is an observer prepared [to record it]" (50:18), a sobering thought when posting, commenting, or sharing. Backbiting, mockery, and spreading rumors are explicitly condemned (49:12), and these sins are just as real in a comment section as in person. Muslims are also commanded to verify information before sharing it: "O you who believe, if a wicked person comes to you with news, investigate" (49:6), a principle directly relevant to how quickly misinformation spreads online. Positively, social media can be used to share beneficial knowledge, support good causes, and stay connected with family and community, aligning with Islam's broader emphasis on beneficial speech and maintaining ties. Muslims are encouraged to be intentional: limiting time that could otherwise go to prayer, family, or self-improvement, lowering the gaze regarding inappropriate content, and remembering that the ease of posting does not lessen accountability for what is said.
