What is the Islamic view on art and creativity?

Islam affirms beauty and creativity as reflections of Allah's own attributes; one of His names is Al-Musawwir, the Fashioner, who gives form and shape to all things (59:24). The Prophet Muhammad said, "Allah is beautiful and loves beauty," showing that appreciating and producing beautiful work is not at odds with faith but can be an expression of it. Historically, Muslim civilization channeled artistic energy into calligraphy, geometric design, architecture, and poetry, often avoiding direct representation of living beings in religious spaces out of caution against anything resembling idol worship. This caution concerns intention and context, not a blanket rejection of creativity itself. What matters most is content and purpose: art that inspires reflection, gratitude, or beneficial knowledge is encouraged, while art that promotes indecency, glorifies sin, or leads people away from Allah is discouraged. A Muslim artist, designer, or writer can see their craft as a form of worship when it is approached with good intention, honesty, and mindfulness of how it affects others.
