Q&A · New Muslim

I don't know any of the prayers yet — how do I actually learn to pray as a total beginner?

Start small and be patient with yourself — every Muslim once stood exactly where you're standing now. Begin by learning one prayer at a time, ideally with someone who can show you the movements in person: a friend at the mosque, an imam, or even a solid video series designed for beginners. Memorize the short opening chapter, Al-Fatiha, first, since it's repeated in every unit of every prayer, then add one or two short surahs like Al-Ikhlas or Al-Kawthar. You don't need fluent Arabic to begin — you need the basic wording and the willingness to keep practicing. Try praying just one prayer correctly today, then build from there rather than trying to master all five at once. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Pray as you have seen me praying," which is why watching and imitating is such an effective way to learn. Allah also reminds us that He does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear, so mistakes along the way are expected and forgiven, not held against you. Consistency matters far more than perfection in these early weeks.
