Q&A · Dua & Dhikr

What are the morning and evening adhkar, and why are they recommended?

The morning and evening adhkar are a set of Quranic verses and prophetic supplications recited after Fajr and after Asr (or before Maghrib), including Ayat al-Kursi, the last two verses of al-Baqarah, Surahs al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas three times each, and short duas seeking protection, wellbeing, and gratitude. Allah commands this rhythm directly: 'O you who believe, remember Allah with much remembrance, and glorify Him morning and evening' (33:41-42). Reciting them at the two hinges of the day — as night turns to morning and day turns to evening — anchors the believer's heart in Allah before the business of daily life takes over, and again as it winds down. The virtues attached to these adhkar are considerable: protection from harm, shaytan, and the evil of creation until the next dhikr session, forgiveness of sins, and a shield of contentment against anxiety. Many are only a sentence or two, so the entire set can be completed in ten to fifteen minutes. Keeping to them consistently — even a shortened version on a busy day — builds a habit of returning to Allah's remembrance that steadies the heart throughout the day.
