Q&A · Death & Afterlife

Who are Munkar and Nakir, and what happens when they question someone in the grave?

According to hadith, shortly after burial, two angels — traditionally named Munkar and Nakir — come to the deceased and ask three questions: Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is this man who was sent to you (referring to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)? A believer who lived with sincere faith answers with calm certainty — my Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, and he is the Messenger of Allah — and is granted peace and ease as a result. Someone who was heedless or hypocritical in life may falter, unable to answer, which becomes a source of distress. The Quran captures the essence of this scene: 'Allah keeps firm those who believe with the firm word, in worldly life and in the Hereafter' (14:27) — commentators have long understood this steadfastness to include the moment of grave-questioning. Rather than reading this as a source of dread, many scholars encourage seeing it as motivation: a life spent genuinely knowing and loving Allah, understanding one's faith, and honoring the Prophet ﷺ's example builds exactly the kind of firm, quiet certainty that carries a person through that moment with peace.
