What is shafa'ah (intercession), and will Prophet Muhammad ﷺ intercede for believers?

Shafa'ah refers to intercession on the Day of Judgment—someone pleading on another's behalf before Allah for mercy, forgiveness, or a lighter reckoning. The Quran establishes that no intercession will benefit anyone except with Allah's permission and for those He is pleased to allow it for; intercession is never automatic or owed, and it can never rescue someone who dies upon shirk (associating partners with Allah) unrepentant, which the Quran describes as unforgivable. Among the forms of intercession described in hadith is al-maqam al-mahmud, the "praiseworthy station," in which Prophet Muhammad ﷺ will intercede for all humanity at the start of the Judgment, asking Allah to begin the reckoning after other prophets decline the request. He is also described as interceding for members of his community who committed major sins, to have them removed from Hell or their entrance delayed, and for raising the ranks of believers in Paradise. Scholars differ on some specifics of scope and mechanism, but the general reality of the Prophet's ﷺ intercession, by Allah's permission, is a well-established point of mainstream belief.
