At what age should children be taught to pray, and how should parents encourage it?

The Prophet gave parents a clear developmental timeline for prayer, instructing: "Command your children to pray when they are seven years old, and discipline them for it, if they persistently neglect it, when they are ten, and separate them in their beds" (Sunan Abu Dawood 495). Between seven and ten, the emphasis is on gentle habituation - modeling prayer, praying alongside children, making wudu' understandable and even enjoyable, and praising effort rather than demanding perfection - rather than punishment. Only from around age ten, and only after neglect despite repeated reminders, does mild, non-harmful correction become a last resort, and even then scholars stress it must never be severe or humiliating. Many parents find it effective to let young children pray beside them from a very early age, well before it becomes obligatory, so prayer becomes a natural, joyful rhythm of daily life rather than a rule imposed later. Consistency, patience, and a warm, unhurried home atmosphere tend to matter far more for lifelong prayer habits than strict enforcement in the early years.
