What does Islam teach about work and the ethics of earning a living?

Islam treats honest work as a dignified, spiritually rewarded part of life rather than a distraction from religion. The Quran instructs believers who have prayed to "disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah" (62:10), placing worldly effort directly alongside worship rather than in opposition to it. The Prophet Muhammad taught that no one ever eats better food than what they earn by the work of their own hands, citing the Prophet Dawud, who ate only from what he produced himself. This elevates honest labor rather than treating dependence on others as more pious. Alongside effort, Islam places heavy emphasis on integrity in work: honesty in transactions, fulfilling contracts, paying workers fairly and promptly, and avoiding fraud, bribery, or exploitation. A believer's work is judged not only by output but by intention and conduct; working diligently is an act of trust in Allah's provision, while cutting corners or deceiving others undermines both one's livelihood and one's faith. In this way, the workplace becomes another arena where character and belief are tested and expressed daily.
