What is fitrah, the natural disposition toward belief in Allah?

Fitrah refers to the innate, God-given disposition Islam teaches every human is born with—a natural inclination toward recognizing one Creator and toward moral truths like honesty, justice, and compassion. The Quran describes this as "the fitrah of Allah upon which He has created mankind," calling it unalterable in its essential nature. A well-known hadith states that every child is born upon the fitrah, and it is the child's upbringing and environment that shape them toward a particular religion or away from natural belief. This does not mean people are born already knowing the details of Islamic law or already Muslim in a formal sense; rather, it means the raw capacity and inclination to recognize and worship one God is embedded in human nature before it is shaped—or distorted—by culture, upbringing, and choice. Fitrah is often cited as one reason Islam considers belief in a Creator to be something people can arrive at through reflection on their own nature and the natural world, not something wholly foreign that must be imposed from outside.
