Why is Surah al-Fatihah given such a special status among the surahs of the Quran?

Al-Fatihah, "The Opening," is the first surah of the Quran and is recited in every unit (rak'ah) of the five daily prayers, making it the most repeated passage in Muslim worship. The Prophet described it directly to a companion as "the greatest surah in the Quran" (Sahih al-Bukhari 4474), and it is also known as Umm al-Kitab ("the Mother of the Book") and as-Sab' al-Mathani ("the seven oft-repeated verses," referencing 15:87). Its seven short verses summarize the Quran's core themes in miniature: praise of Allah, acknowledgment of His mercy and sovereignty, a declaration of sole worship and dependence on Him, and a heartfelt request for guidance to the straight path — the path of those He has favored, not those who earned His anger or went astray. Classical scholars noted that the rest of the Quran can be seen as an extended answer to the prayer for guidance made in al-Fatihah's final verses. Because it functions almost as a conversation between the worshipper and Allah, with tradition holding that Allah responds to each line as it is recited, many scholars consider a prayer invalid if performed without reciting it.
