Q&A · Women in Islam

Does Islam emphasize education for women?

Yes, seeking knowledge is presented in Islamic teaching as a responsibility applying to women just as it does to men. The very first word revealed in the Quran was Iqra — Read (96:1) — addressed to humanity without gender qualification, and the Quran repeatedly praises those who possess knowledge and reflect upon creation. In practice, women were active participants in the Prophet's ﷺ own teaching circles; it is reported that the women of Madinah asked the Prophet ﷺ to set aside a specific day for their religious instruction because the men's gatherings left them less opportunity to ask questions, and he agreed (Sahih al-Bukhari 101). Aisha became one of the foremost teachers of Islamic law and hadith to both men and women after the Prophet's ﷺ death, and generations of female hadith scholars followed in her footsteps, some traveling widely to teach and receive certification in the religious sciences. This tradition reached a landmark expression when Fatima al-Fihri founded the University of al-Qarawiyyin in 859 CE, which continues to operate today. Historically, denying women education was a cultural failing in various Muslim societies, not a reflection of the religion's actual teaching.
