Q&A · Zakat

Is there a special zakat calculation for livestock like camels, cattle, or sheep?

Yes. Zakat on grazing livestock (an'am) — camels, cattle, sheep, and goats — has its own detailed nisab and rates, distinct from cash zakat, based on the letter Abu Bakr al-Siddiq sent to zakat collectors detailing the Prophet's ﷺ instructions. For camels, no zakat is due below five; at five, one sheep is due, rising in stages to camels of increasing age and value as the herd grows. For sheep and goats, no zakat is due below forty animals; between forty and one-hundred-twenty, one sheep is due, with the number owed increasing as the flock passes 120 and 200. Cattle follow a similar tiered system starting around thirty head. A key condition in the majority view is that the animals must be sa'ima — grazing freely on natural pasture for most of the year rather than being stall-fed on purchased fodder — since stall-fed animals are instead treated as trade goods or personal property unless raised specifically for sale. Herds below the stated thresholds owe no obligatory zakat at all, though voluntary sadaqah is always encouraged.
