Yusuf (Joseph)

The truthful prophet who rose from the well to authority in Egypt
Ancient Egypt

Yusuf (peace be upon him) saw a dream of eleven stars, the sun and the moon prostrating to him, and his father Ya'qub advised him to conceal it from his jealous brothers (12:4-6). Out of envy, his brothers took him and cast him into the bottom of a well, then told their father a wolf had devoured him (12:15-18). A caravan drew him out and sold him for a paltry price, and he was bought by a man in Egypt (12:19-21).

In the house of his master, the wife attempted to seduce him, but Yusuf refused, seeking refuge in Allah, and evidence of his innocence appeared (12:23-28). Though innocent, he was imprisoned, where he called two fellow prisoners to the worship of Allah alone and interpreted their dreams (12:36-41).

When the king dreamt of seven fat and seven lean cows, Yusuf interpreted it as years of plenty followed by years of famine, and advised careful storage of grain (12:43-49). His innocence was established, and the king raised him to authority over the storehouses of the land (12:54-56).

During the famine his brothers came seeking provisions, not recognising him, and through wise planning Yusuf reunited his family and revealed himself (12:58-90). When his brothers admitted their wrong, he replied, "No blame upon you today; Allah will forgive you, and He is the most merciful of the merciful" (12:92). He brought his parents to Egypt, and his early dream was fulfilled as his family bowed before him, and he thanked Allah, praying to die as one submitting to Him (12:100-101).
