Why wuḍūʾ — no prayer is accepted without it
Purity (ṭahārah) is the gateway to the greatest act of worship. The Prophet ﷺ said, "The key to Salat is the purification…" (Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī 3, sahih), and warned that without it prayer is not accepted:
لَا تُقْبَلُ صَلَاةٌ بِغَيْرِ طُهُورٍ
"No Salat is accepted without Wudu' (purification)…"
Ibn ʿUmar (ra) — Sahih Muslim — site reader no. 441, Kitab al-Taharah
And beyond duty, it is a mercy: ʿUthmān (ra) described the Prophet's ﷺ wuḍūʾ and then relayed his promise that "If anyone performs ablution like that of mine and offers a two-rak'at prayer during which he does not think of anything else (not related to the present prayer) then his past sins will be forgiven" (Sahih al-Bukhari 159; also Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Taharah — site reader no. 444). The command, and the four obligatory washings, come straight from the Quran:
"O you who believe! When you rise to pray, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe over your heads, and [wash] your feet up to the ankles."
Quran 5:6 (Al-Māʾidah)
Wuḍūʾ, step by step
The full Sunnah wuḍūʾ in order. The four shaded steps are the obligations from Quran 5:6; the rest are confirmed sunnah.
How to perform wudu, step by step. Step 1: make the intention (niyyah) in the heart and say Bismillah. Step 2: wash the hands up to the wrists three times. Step 3: rinse the mouth and sniff water into the nose then blow it out, three times. Step 4 (obligatory): wash the whole face three times. Step 5 (obligatory): wash the arms up to and including the elbows, right then left, three times. Step 6 (obligatory): wipe the whole head once with wet hands, and wipe the ears. Step 7 (obligatory): wash the feet up to and including the ankles, right then left, three times, cleaning between the toes. Step 8: say the shahadah afterward. The four obligations are washing the face, washing the arms to the elbows, wiping the head, and washing the feet to the ankles, in order and without a long gap.
Intend wuḍūʾ in the heart (not spoken), and say Bismillah.
Up to the wrists, right then left.
Rinse the mouth (maḍmaḍah); sniff water in & blow it out (istinshāq/istinthār).
The whole face — forehead to chin, ear to ear.
Farḍ · 5:6Including the elbows — right arm, then left.
Farḍ · 5:6With wet hands, front to back and back again; then wipe the ears.
Farḍ · 5:6Including the ankles, right then left — clean between the toes.
Farḍ · 5:6Say the shahādah (see below) — the gates of Paradise open for it.
The four obligations (from Quran 5:6) are washing the face, the arms to the elbows, wiping the head, and washing the feet to the ankles — done in order and without a long gap (muwālāh). The rest above is confirmed sunnah that completes and perfects it.
The obligations and the sunan
The four obligatory washings named in 5:6 are the face, the arms to the elbows, wiping the head, and the feet to the ankles — and the scholars add, from the Sunnah, that they be done in the Quranic order and consecutively (muwālāh), with the intention. If any obligation is left out, the wuḍūʾ is invalid. Everything else — Bismillah, washing the hands first, rinsing the mouth and nose, wiping the ears, doing each part three times, starting with the right — is sunnah: it multiplies the reward and perfects the act, but its omission does not invalidate the wuḍūʾ.
What breaks wuḍūʾ (nawāqiḍ)
Wuḍūʾ remains until one of the following nullifies it — then it must be renewed for prayer:
- Anything exiting the two private passages — urine, stool, or breaking wind. The Quran names "one of you coming from the toilet" among the causes (Quran 5:6), and the Prophet ﷺ said of a person in doubt, "He should not leave his prayers unless he hears sound or smells something" (Sahih al-Bukhari 137).
- Deep sleep that removes awareness (lying down); a light doze while seated does not break it.
- Loss of consciousness — fainting, intoxication, or anything that removes the intellect.
- Direct contact with the private parts with the bare hand (per the stronger view, from the hadith of Busrah bint Ṣafwān — Sunan Abi Dawud 181, sahih).
- Eating camel meat. A man asked, "Shall I perform wuḍūʾ after eating camel meat?" and the Prophet ﷺ said, "Yes, perform ablution (after eating) camel's flesh" (Jābir ibn Samurah — Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Hayd — site reader no. 706; and al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib — Sunan Abi Dawud 184, sahih). This is the evidence-based ruling — the position of the Ḥanbalī school and the one favoured by the verifying scholars (Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Bāz, al-Albānī, Ibn ʿUthaymīn). The majority of the other schools hold it does not break wuḍūʾ; it is an old and respected difference, so there is no censure of one who follows either.
Ordinary things do not break it — touching a spouse without desire, bleeding from a wound, vomiting, or eating other foods. When the Prophet ﷺ was asked about mutton in the same hadith, he said, "Perform ablution if you so desire, and if you do not wish, do not perform it" (Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Hayd — site reader no. 706). When in genuine doubt whether wuḍūʾ broke, the certainty (that you had it) stands until you are sure.
Wiping over socks & footwear (masḥ ʿalā al-khuffayn)
A concession of the Sunnah: once wuḍūʾ has been made with the feet washed and then leather socks or thick footwear (khuff) are put on, in a later wuḍūʾ one may wipe over them instead of washing the feet. The Prophet ﷺ did so (Sahih al-Bukhari 206; Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Taharah — site reader no. 532). The period is one day and night for a resident, and three days and nights for a traveller (Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Taharah — site reader no. 544), starting from the first wipe after they were worn. It ends if the socks are removed or major impurity (janābah) occurs, which requires ghusl.
The duʿāʾ after wuḍūʾ
"I testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the servant of Allah and His Messenger."
ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab (ra) — Sahih Muslim — site reader no. 459, Kitab al-Taharah — "…the eight gates of Paradise would be opened for him and he may enter by whichever of them he wishes."
A recommended addition reported in the Sunan: "…O Allah! Make me among the repentant, and make me among those who purify themselves" (Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī 55).
Do
- Complete the four obligations, in order, without a long gap
- Say Bismillah and begin with the right
- Rinse the mouth & nose, wipe the ears
- Wash each part three times where washing applies
- Say the shahādah afterward
Avoid
- Leaving a spot of the face, arm, or foot dry
- Wasting water (isrāf) — the Sunnah is moderation
- Praying without renewing wuḍūʾ after it breaks
- Speaking the intention aloud (it is of the heart)
- Baseless doubt (waswasah) that it broke — certainty stands
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a new wuḍūʾ for every prayer?
No — one wuḍūʾ remains valid for as many prayers as you like until something breaks it. Renewing it for each prayer is a virtue, not a requirement.
Does touching my wife/husband break wuḍūʾ?
According to the stronger view, ordinary touching of a spouse without emission does not break wuḍūʾ — the Prophet ﷺ would kiss a wife and then pray without renewing it (Sunan Abi Dawud 179). What necessitates a full ghusl (janābah) is a separate matter.
What if I have a cast, bandage, or wound I can't wash?
Wipe over the bandage/cast with wet hands in place of washing that part; if even wiping would harm the wound, it is left and the rest completed. If water is genuinely unavailable or harmful for the whole wuḍūʾ, one performs tayammum (dry ablution) instead — see Quran 5:6.
I struggle with constant doubts that my wuḍūʾ broke. What do I do?
This is waswasah (whispering), and the ruling is to ignore it: act on certainty, not doubt. Once you have made wuḍūʾ, you keep it until you are sure — "a sound or a smell" — it broke. Do not repeat wuḍūʾ or prayer on mere feelings; seek refuge in Allah from Shayṭān.
