Music, Images & Entertainment

One of the most asked and most confused areas: singing and instruments, photography and drawing of living beings, statues, and film and games. Here are the evidence-led positions with their proofs, the permitted alternatives the Sunnah gives, and honest notes on where scholars genuinely differ.

The balance — Islam is not against joy

Islam does not frown on happiness, beauty, play or rest. Lawful entertainment, sport, good poetry, gatherings, and the enjoyment of Allah's blessings are all permitted — indeed the default ruling for worldly things is permissibility until a proof forbids. The Prophet ﷺ raced his wife ʿĀʾishah, allowed play and celebration, and warned against gloomy excess. So this page is not about banning fun — it is about the specific things where clear evidence sets a limit, stated with their daleel and with honesty about where scholars differ.

Quran — the principle

"Say: Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has produced for His servants, and the good things of provision?"

Quran 7:32 (Al-Aʿrāf)

The evidence-led positions, side by side — with the permitted alternatives.

Entertainment in Islam at a glance. Sound: musical instruments are impermissible according to the majority, based on Sahih al-Bukhari 5590 and Quran 31:6; but the permitted alternatives are the human voice, good poetry, voice-only nasheed, and the duff frame drum for women at weddings and Eid, Sahih al-Bukhari 952. Images: statues of living beings and images made for veneration are prohibited, and the image-makers are sternly warned, Sahih al-Bukhari 5950; but children's toys are excepted and photography for a genuine need is permitted by many contemporary scholars. Screens and games: content carrying nudity, sin, mockery of religion, gambling, or that drowns out prayer and duties is forbidden; but clean film, sport, and wholesome games in moderation are permitted. The key principle: the default in worldly things is permissibility until a proof forbids, and the two tests for entertainment are does it contain the forbidden, and is it stealing time owed to Allah.

The two tests for any entertainment: (1) Does it contain the forbidden? (2) Is it stealing time I owe to Allah, prayer and family? The default in worldly things is permissibility — a prohibition needs a proof.

Musical instruments — the evidence-led position

The position of the majority of the scholars of the four madhhabs and the verifying scholars of Ahl as-Sunnah is that musical instruments (al-maʿāzif) are impermissible. The clearest proof is the ḥadīth in which the Prophet ﷺ foretold their being wrongly made lawful:

Hadith — those who make maʿāzif lawful Sahih

"From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful."

Narrated by Abū ʿĀmir/Abū Mālik al-Ashʿarī — Sahih al-Bukhari 5590

To list instruments among things known to be forbidden — and to censure those who "make them lawful" — indicates their prohibition. This is reinforced by the tafsīr of the Companions on "And of the people is he who buys idle talk (lahw al-ḥadīth) to mislead from the way of Allah" (31:6): Ibn Masʿūd swore, "By Allah, it is singing," and Ibn ʿAbbās and others read it the same way. The wisdom is that instrumental music tends to harden the heart to the Quran and stir the lower desires.

An honest note on the ikhtilāf: a minority of scholars, past and present, held some music permissible, questioning the chain or the interpretation. But the stronger, mainstream evidence-led view — and the safer path for the heart — is to leave instrumental music. Where a matter is disputed, "leave what makes you doubt for what does not" (Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī 2518).

What sound the Sunnah clearly permits

Not all sound is prohibited — the beautiful human voice, good poetry, and one instrument are expressly allowed:

Hadith — the duff and singing on Eid Sahih

"Narrated Aisha:Abu Bakr came to my house while two small Ansari girls were singing beside me the stories of the Ansar concerning the Day of Buath. And they were not singers. Abu Bakr said protestingly, "Musical instruments of Satan in the house of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) !" It happened on the `Id day and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "O Abu Bakr! There is an `Id for every nation and this is our `Id"

Narrated by ʿĀʾishah — Sahih al-Bukhari 952

So the Sunnah permits: the duff (a one-sided frame drum) for women, especially at weddings and Eid, to announce and celebrate a marriage (Sunan an-Nasāʾī 3369); good poetry and nashīd without instruments — "some poetry is wisdom" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6145); and a naturally beautiful recitation of the Quran, which the Prophet ﷺ loved to hear. The permitted lane is real and generous.

Images and statues of living beings

The making of images (taṣwīr) of things with a soul — and above all three-dimensional statues — carries a stern warning in the Sunnah, rooted in guarding tawḥīd (idols began as honoured images):

Hadith — the makers of images Sahih

"The people who will receive the severest punishment from Allah will be the picture makers."

Narrated by ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd — Sahih al-Bukhari 5950

Hadith — images and the angels Sahih

"Angels (of Mercy) do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or a picture of a living creature (a human being or an animal)."

Narrated by Abū Ṭalḥah — Sahih al-Bukhari 3225

Statues of living beings are prohibited by agreement, especially for veneration. Photography is an area of genuine scholarly difference: many contemporary scholars distinguish a photograph (a captured reflection, taken for a need — ID, documents, teaching, safety) from a hand-crafted image or idol and permit it for such needs while discouraging decorative portraiture; others apply the prohibition more broadly. Children's toys and dolls are excepted — ʿĀʾishah played with dolls with the Prophet's ﷺ knowledge (Sahih al-Bukhari 6130). Follow a trustworthy scholar on the details.

Film, television and games — judged by content

Screens and games are tools; their ruling follows what they carry. Clean content — a documentary, a sport, a wholesome game, a beneficial lecture — is permissible in moderation. It becomes blameworthy or forbidden when it contains the ḥarām (nudity and immodesty, promotion of sin or disbelief, mockery of the religion, gambling mechanics, heavy music), or when it becomes lahw that swallows time owed to prayer, family and duties. The measure is two questions: does it contain the forbidden? and is it stealing me from what I owe Allah? "Indeed among the excellence of a person's Islam is that he leaves what does not concern him" (Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī 2317, ḥasan).

Frequently asked questions

Is all music really ḥarām?

The mainstream, evidence-led position of the four madhhabs and the verifying scholars is that musical instruments are impermissible (Bukhari 5590; 31:6 as read by Ibn Masʿūd and Ibn ʿAbbās). The human voice, good poetry, nashīd without instruments, and the duff for celebration are permitted. A minority of scholars differed on instruments; we mention that honestly, while holding that the stronger evidence and the safer path is to leave them — especially given how music competes with the Quran in the heart.

Are nashīds (Islamic songs) allowed?

Yes, when they are voice-only with wholesome words — good poetry is praised in the Sunnah (Bukhari 6145), and the Companions chanted while working and travelling. Caution is due with nashīds layered with instruments or heavy studio effects that imitate music, and with turning even good words into idle obsession. Meaningful, clean, voice-based nashīd is a fine permitted alternative.

Does the ruling on images mean I can't take photos at all?

This is a real area of scholarly difference. Many contemporary scholars permit photography for a genuine need — identification, documents, education, safety, keeping in touch — distinguishing a captured image from a hand-made picture or an idol; they discourage hanging decorative portraits of people and animals. Others are stricter. Avoid images used for veneration or immodesty, keep the home free of hung portraits where you can, and follow a reliable scholar on the rest.

Are video games permissible?

By the same content test: a game free of the ḥarām (immodesty, music you cannot disable, gambling mechanics, glorifying sin or disbelief) is permissible in moderation. It turns blameworthy when it is excessive — eating into prayers, sleep, study, and family — or carries forbidden content. Play as recreation, not as a master over your time; "he leaves what does not concern him" (Tirmidhī 2317) is a mark of good Islam.
