Tayammum — The Dry Ablution

A mercy of the Sharīʿah and a special gift to this ummah: when water is unavailable or would cause harm, the earth itself becomes your means of purity. Here is when tayammum is valid, how the Prophet ﷺ taught it — one strike, face and hands — and what nullifies it.

Arabic termAt-Tayammum (التَّيَمُّم)
MeaningPurity with clean earth
WhenNo water, or water would harm (5:6)
MethodOne strike — face & hands (Bukhari 347)

What is tayammum — the dry ablution

Tayammum (تَيَمُّم) is purification with clean earth in place of water, when water is absent or its use would cause harm. It is a mercy and a special honour of this ummah — the Prophet ﷺ said he was given what no prophet before him was: "I have been given five things which were not given to any one else before me.…The earth has been made for me (and for my followers) a place for praying and a thing to perform Tayammum" (Sahih al-Bukhari 335). Allah legislated it in the same verse that commands wuḍūʾ and ghusl:

Quran

"…and you find no water, then perform tayammum with clean earth, wiping your faces and your hands with it."

Quran 5:6 (Al-Māʾidah)

It stands in for both wuḍūʾ (from minor impurity) and ghusl (from janābah) — "Allah does not intend to burden you" (5:6). It completes the ṭahārah set alongside wuḍūʾ and ghusl.

When tayammum is valid

Tayammum replaces water in these cases:

Hadith — clean earth is the Muslim's purifier Sahih

"Abu Dharr narrated that :AlIah's Messenger said: "Pure clean earth is a purifier for the Muslim; even if he did not find water for ten years. Then if he finds water, then let him use it (for purification) on his skin. For, that is better"

Narrated by Abū Dharr — Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī 124 (Sahih)

The valid cases are: (1) no water is available; (2) the water is too little, needed for drinking or survival; (3) using water would cause or worsen illness/harm — one of the Companions who did ghusl in the cold on a wound died, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "They killed him, may Allah kill them! Could they not ask when they did not know? The cure for ignorance is inquiry. It was enough for him to perform tayammum" (Sunan Abī Dāwūd 336), teaching that tayammum, not harmful water, was due; (4) water cannot be reached or is too far/unsafe to obtain.

How to perform tayammum

The method the Prophet ﷺ taught ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir is simple — one strike of the hands, then wipe the face and hands:

Infographic — tayammum, step by step

From the ḥadīth of ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir (Sahih al-Bukhari 347, Sahih Muslim 368).

Tayammum step by step, from the hadith of Ammar ibn Yasir. Step 1: make the intention in the heart to purify for prayer, and say Bismillah. Step 2: strike both palms once on clean earth or any clean natural surface such as sand, stone, or dust. Step 3: blow off or shake the excess dust from the palms. Step 4: wipe the whole face once with both hands. Step 5: wipe the back of the right hand with the left, and the back of the left with the right, up to the wrists. That completes it; it substitutes for wudu, and for ghusl when in a state of major impurity. The key point: it is one strike, and only the face and hands are wiped; the intention and belief that purity comes by Allah's permission are essential.

  1. Intend in the heart to purify for prayer, and say Bismillāh.
  2. Strike both palms once on clean earth or any clean natural surface (sand, stone, dust). Bukhari 347
  3. Blow off / shake the excess dust from the palms. Muslim 368
  4. Wipe the whole face once with both hands.
  5. Wipe the backs of the hands to the wrists — the left over the right, the right over the left.

That is all. One strike, face and hands. It substitutes for wuḍūʾ, and for ghusl when in janābah. The Prophet ﷺ corrected ʿAmmār, who had rolled in the dust — "it would have been enough for you to do this," and he struck the earth once, blew, and wiped his face and hands.

What nullifies tayammum

Tayammum is broken by everything that breaks wuḍūʾ (using the toilet, wind, deep sleep, etc.) — and by two things special to it: the availability of water for the one who did it due to lack of it, and the removal of the excuse (recovery from the illness that made water harmful). If water appears, one returns to wuḍūʾ for the next prayer. But a prayer already offered with a valid tayammum is complete and not repeated — the Prophet ﷺ told two men who prayed with tayammum and then found water, one of whom repeated the prayer, "You followed the sunnah (model behavior of the Prophet) and your (first) prayer was enough for you" (Sunan Abī Dāwūd 338).

Valid

  • When no water is available or reachable
  • When water would cause or worsen illness
  • When water is needed for drinking/survival
  • On any clean natural surface — earth, sand, stone, dust on a wall
  • For both wuḍūʾ and ghusl (janābah)

Common mistakes

  • Doing it while water is present & usable
  • Two or three strikes, or washing instead of wiping
  • Wiping the arms to the elbows (only the hands to the wrists)
  • Repeating a valid prayer once water is found
  • Neglecting the intention (niyyah)

Frequently asked questions

Can I make tayammum on a wall, carpet or stone — not just soil?

Yes. The term in the verse is ṣaʿīd ṭayyib — clean earth/surface — which the majority take to include sand, stone, and any clean natural surface bearing dust, such as a dusty wall or rock. Manufactured surfaces free of any earth/dust are more doubtful; where clean dust is present on a surface, it suffices. The ease of the ruling matches its purpose as a mercy.

Does tayammum work for major impurity (janābah)?

Yes. When water is unavailable or harmful, tayammum lifts janābah too and permits prayer and touching the Quran — the same single method. The Prophet ﷺ permitted a Companion in janābah on a cold journey to make tayammum and lead the prayer (Sunan Abī Dāwūd 334). When water becomes available, ghusl is then performed.

How many prayers can I pray with one tayammum?

The same as wuḍūʾ: it remains valid until it is nullified. Many scholars allow praying multiple prayers with one tayammum as long as nothing broke it and no water was found; others prefer a fresh tayammum for each obligatory prayer out of caution, given it is a substitute for a specific need. Following either is sound; the first is the ease the ruling was given for.

What if water appears during the prayer?

If you began a prayer with valid tayammum and water appears during it, the majority hold you continue and complete your prayer — it was validly begun. You then use water for the next prayer. If water is found before starting, and you can use it, you must use it instead.
