Women in Islam

The status, rights and honour Islam gives women — as daughter, wife and mother — told plainly from the Quran and authentic Sunnah, without apology and without exaggeration, on the way of the Salaf. And honest answers to the questions most often raised.

CreatedFrom a single soul (4:1)
Equal in rewardMale & female believers (33:35)
Highest honourThe mother — three times (Bukhari 5971)
A rule of the BookNo compulsion in religion (2:256)

How Islam raised the status of women

Islam did not arrive into a vacuum but into a world that buried infant girls alive and counted women as property. The Quran named that cruelty and abolished it — and made the newborn girl a witness on the Day of Judgement against those who wronged her:

Quran

وَإِذَا ٱلْمَوْءُۥدَةُ سُئِلَتْ ۝ بِأَىِّ ذَنۢبٍ قُتِلَتْ

"And when the buried infant girl is asked, for what sin she was killed."

Quran 81:8–9 (At-Takwīr)

It declared men and women created from a single soul (4:1), equal in their humanity and in reward: "Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while being a believer — We will surely give them a good life" (16:97). Believing men and women are one another's allies and protectors (9:71). Nobility is not by gender but by taqwā: "The most noble of you before Allah is the most righteous" (49:13).

The rights Islam guarantees

Centuries before they were recognised elsewhere, Islam gave women rights as a matter of divine law — not favour.

Infographic — a woman's rights in Islam

Guaranteed by revelation, not granted by custom.

A woman's rights in Islam. Property and earnings: a woman owns her wealth and income independently; marriage does not transfer it, Quran 4:32. Inheritance: a guaranteed fixed share of the estate, Quran 4:7 and 4:11. Consent in marriage: no marriage is valid without her consent, Sahih al-Bukhari 5136. Education: seeking knowledge is an obligation on every Muslim, male and female, Sunan Ibn Majah 224. Mahr and maintenance: the bridal gift is her own, and her financial support is the husband's duty, Quran 4:4 and 4:34. Dignity and protection: kind treatment is commanded and harming women is condemned, Quran 4:19. The measure of a man's faith is how well he treats the women of his household; and the mother is honoured three times over the father.

Quran 4:19

The measure the Prophet ﷺ set: "The best of you is the best to his wives" (Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī 3895), and he raised the mother three times above the father in the right to good company (Sahih al-Bukhari 5971).

As a daughter — a means to Paradise

Far from a burden, daughters became a path to Paradise for the one who raises them well:

Hadith — whoever is tested with daughters Sahih

"Whoever is in charge of (put to test by) these daughters and treats them generously, then they will act as a shield for him from the (Hell) Fire."

Narrated by ʿĀʾishah — Sahih al-Bukhari 5995 & Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Birr wa'l-Silah (site reader no. 6530)

The Prophet ﷺ promised: "He, who brought up two girls properly till they grew up, he and I would come (together) (very closely) on the Day of Resurrection" — and he interlaced his fingers (Sahih Muslim — site reader no. 6532, Kitab al-Birr wa'l-Silah).

As a wife — a garment and a trust

Spouses are described as garments for one another — closeness, protection, comfort (2:187). The husband is commanded to live with her in kindness, even where he dislikes something:

Quran

"And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them — perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good."

Quran 4:19 (An-Nisāʾ)

He owes her a mahr that is hers alone (4:4), her full maintenance regardless of her own wealth (4:34), and the Prophet ﷺ made good treatment of her the very sign of a complete believer: "The most complete of the believers in faith, is the one with the best character among them. And the best of you are those who are best to your women" (Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī 1162).

As a mother — under whose care is honour

No status in Islam is raised higher than the mother's. When a man asked who most deserved his good company, the Prophet ﷺ answered "your mother" three times before naming the father:

Hadith — "your mother, your mother, your mother" Sahih

"A man came to Allah's Messenger ﷺ and said, 'O Allah's Messenger ﷺ! Who is more entitled to be treated with the best companionship by me?' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Your mother.' The man said. 'Who is next?' The Prophet said, 'Your mother.' The man further said, 'Who is next?' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Your mother.' The man asked for the fourth time, 'Who is next?' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Your father.'"

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah — Sahih al-Bukhari 5971 & Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Birr wa'l-Silah (site reader no. 6341)

Her pregnancy, birth and nursing are named by Allah as reasons to thank both Him and her (31:14, 46:15). See more on Birr al-Wālidayn — the Rights of Parents.

The ḥijāb — dignity, not oppression

The head-covering and modest dress are commanded for the believing women as an act of worship and a protection of dignity — "that they be known and not harmed" (33:59; also 24:31). It is a woman's own act of obedience to Allah, exactly as men have their own commands of lowered gaze and modesty (24:30). To force it on anyone contradicts "there is no compulsion in religion" (2:256); to mock or ban it is to deny a woman her choice. See also Common Misconceptions.

Honest answers to common questions

What Islam honours

  • Her independent wealth, inheritance & earnings
  • Her consent, her mahr, her maintenance
  • Her pursuit of knowledge and worship — equal in reward (33:35)
  • Her honour as daughter, wife and mother
  • Kindness as the mark of a man's faith

Cultural distortions to reject

  • Denying women their Islamic inheritance
  • Forced marriage — invalid in the Sharīʿah
  • Barring women from the masjid or from learning
  • "Honour" crimes, domestic abuse — sins, not Islam
  • Treating culture or oppression as if it were religion

Frequently asked questions

Why does a woman sometimes inherit half of a man's share?

Only in specific cases — and it is balanced by responsibility, not worth. In the cases where a son inherits twice a daughter's share, it is because he is financially liable for wives, children and relatives, while her share is entirely her own with no obligation to spend it. In fact, Islamic inheritance has cases where a woman inherits equal to or more than a man. It is a system of proportional responsibility, revealed by Allah (4:11).

Doesn't the Quran value a woman's testimony as half?

No — not as a general rule of worth. The two-women provision (2:282) is specific to financial contracts, "so that if one errs the other can remind her," in an era when women were less involved in commerce. In many other matters a single woman's testimony is decisive and accepted alone — such as sighting the moon, breastfeeding, and matters of childbirth — and in the oath of li'ān, hers stands equal to a man's. Context, not a fixed ratio of value.

Is polygyny proof that Islam favours men over women?

Polygyny is permitted, not commanded, and tightly bound: a maximum of four, and only on the condition of just, equal treatment — "but if you fear you will not be just, then only one" (4:3). Far from lawless, it regulated and capped a pre-existing practice and provided for widows and orphans. The default of the Sunnah is one wife well cared for; injustice between wives is a grave sin the Prophet ﷺ warned against severely.

What does it mean that men are "qawwāmūn" over women (4:34)?

It means maintainers and protectors — a duty of care and financial responsibility, not a licence to oppress. The husband carries the burden of provision and protection; it is a role of service and accountability before Allah, and he is the one commanded to kindness (4:19). Leadership in the household is responsibility, not superiority — "each of you is a shepherd and responsible for his flock" (Bukhari 893).
