Hajjat al-Wada' — the Farewell Pilgrimage

The only Hajj the Prophet ﷺ ever performed — the journey on which he taught the ummah its rites, delivered the sermon that summarized Islam, and received the verse announcing the religion complete.

Why it is called the Farewell Hajj

In the tenth year after the Hijrah, the Prophet ﷺ announced he would perform the Hajj, and Muslims poured into Madinah from every direction to accompany him. It was his first and only full Hajj in Islam — and, as it proved, his farewell to the ummah. Along its stations he repeatedly signalled that this was a parting: teaching the pilgrims each rite in person, telling them — as Jabir ibn Abdullah relates in Sahih Muslim (1297) — to take their rites from him, for he did not know whether he would perform Hajj again after that year, and closing his great sermon by asking the crowd to bear witness that he had conveyed the message. Roughly three months after returning to Madinah, he ﷺ passed away. The generation that buried him named the journey what it had turned out to be: Hajjat al-Wada' — the Pilgrimage of Farewell. Scholars also call it Hajjat al-Balagh (the Hajj of Conveying) and Hajjat al-Islam.

What happened — the journey, day by day

Infographic — The stations of the Farewell Hajj

The Prophet's ﷺ only pilgrimage, station by station — from the miqat of Dhul-Hulayfah to the farewell circuit of the Kaaba. The gold node marks Arafah, the day of the sermon and the verse of completion.

A vertical timeline of the eight stations of the Farewell Pilgrimage in order. One: Dhul-Hulayfah, late Dhul-Qa'dah of 10 AH, the miqat where the Prophet entered ihram and raised the talbiyah. Two: Makkah on the 4th of Dhul-Hijjah, tawaf of arrival and sa'i between Safa and Marwah, and the establishing of Tamattu'. Three: Mina on the 8th, the Day of Tarwiyah, where the pilgrims moved and prayed. Four, the highlighted peak: Arafah on the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah, a Friday, where after midday he delivered the Farewell Sermon, joined Dhuhr and Asr, stood in supplication until sunset, and where the verse of completion, Quran 5:3, descended. Five: Muzdalifah on the night that followed, where he rested and prayed Fajr. Six: Yawm an-Nahr, the 10th, the Day of Sacrifice, with the stoning of Jamrat al-Aqabah, the sacrifice, shaving the head, Tawaf al-Ifadah, and a second sermon. Seven: the days of Tashriq, the 11th to 13th, stoning the three Jamarat each day at Mina. Eight: Tawaf al-Wada, the farewell circuit of the Kaaba, before the return to Madinah.

Late Dhul-Qa'dah, 10 AH

Out from Madinah, into ihram

The Prophet ﷺ left Madinah with his wives and the great mass of pilgrims, entered ihram at the miqat of Dhul-Hulayfah, and raised the talbiyah — "Labbayk Allahumma labbayk…" — the cry the whole valley took up with him. Most companions entered ihram intending Hajj with him, some combining it with Umrah.

4 Dhul-Hijjah

Arrival in Makkah

He ﷺ performed tawaf of arrival and sa'i between Safa and Marwah, then commanded those who had not brought a sacrificial animal to convert their intention to Umrah and exit ihram — establishing Tamattu' as a rite for the ummah (see the three ways of performing Hajj).

8 Dhul-Hijjah — Yawm at-Tarwiyah

To Mina

The pilgrims moved to Mina and prayed there, as pilgrims still do on the same day, in the same valley.

9 Dhul-Hijjah — the Day of Arafah, a Friday

Arafah: the sermon, and the verse of completion

After midday he ﷺ delivered the Farewell Sermon from his camel in the valley of Uranah, combined Dhuhr and Asr, then stood in supplication at Arafah until sunset. On this day and at this place, the ayah of completion descended — the companions marked it forever after.

Night of Muzdalifah, then 10 Dhul-Hijjah — Yawm an-Nahr

Muzdalifah, the Jamarah, the sacrifice

He ﷺ rested at Muzdalifah, prayed Fajr there, then stoned Jamrat al-Aqabah, offered the sacrifice — Jabir's narration in Sahih Muslim (1218) records sixty-three camels slaughtered by his own hand, the rest completed by Ali — a number later scholars observed matched the years of his ﷺ life — shaved his head, and performed Tawaf al-Ifadah. On this day too he ﷺ delivered a second sermon to the assembled pilgrims.

11–13 Dhul-Hijjah, then the farewell tawaf

The days of Tashriq, and departure

He ﷺ remained at Mina stoning the three Jamarat each day, then descended to Makkah and made Tawaf al-Wada' — the farewell circuit of the Kaaba — before turning back to Madinah. Every rite pilgrims perform today traces to what he did on these days.

Hadith — a ruling born on the road

"Narrated `Abdullah bin `Abbas:Al-Fadl (his brother) was riding behind Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and a woman from the tribe of Khath'am came and Al-Fadl started looking at her and she started looking at him. The Prophet (ﷺ) turned Al-Fadl's face to the other side. The woman said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! The obligation of Hajj enjoined by Allah on His devotees has become due on my father and he is old and weak, and he cannot sit firm on the Mount; may I perform Hajj on his behalf?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "Yes, you may." That happened during the Hajj-al-Wida (of the Prophet (ﷺ)"

Sahih al-Bukhari 1513

The Farewell Sermon — what he ﷺ said

Delivered at Arafah to the largest audience of his life, repeated in parts at Mina on the Day of Sacrifice, the sermon condensed the religion into a few minutes. Its themes, as preserved across the Sahih collections and the sirah:

The sermon, as transmitted

No single book records the whole sermon in one verbatim text — it reaches us in pieces across the collections, the longest continuous account being Jabir ibn Abdullah's narration in Sahih Muslim. What follows is the sermon as classically assembled from those narrations, with each passage's source marked:

"O people, hear me, for I do not know whether I shall meet you again after this year in this place. — Jabir's narration, Sahih Muslim; the sirah

"Verily, your blood and your property are sacred to you, like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this city of yours. — Jabir's narration, Sahih Muslim; Sahih al-Bukhari (the sanctity declaration)

"Behold — everything of the affair of Jahiliyyah is placed beneath these two feet of mine. The blood-claims of Jahiliyyah are abolished, and the first blood-claim I abolish is that of our own house — the blood of Ibn Rabi'ah ibn al-Harith. And the riba of Jahiliyyah is abolished, and the first riba I abolish is our own riba — that of Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib; it is annulled, all of it. — Jabir's narration, Sahih Muslim

"Fear Allah concerning women, for you have taken them by the trust of Allah and made their persons lawful to you by the word of Allah. You have rights over them, and they have rights over you — their provision and their clothing, according to what is fair. — Jabir's narration, Sahih Muslim

"O people: all of you are from Adam, and Adam was from dust. There is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab, nor of a non-Arab over an Arab; nor of white over black, nor black over white — except by taqwa. The most noble of you with Allah is the most God-fearing of you. — the sirah and Musnad Ahmad 23489 (graded sahih in the site's hadith repository); its meaning fixed by Quran 49:13

"Every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim: nothing of his brother is lawful to a Muslim except what he gives willingly. So do not wrong yourselves — and do not revert after me to disbelief, striking one another's necks. — Sahih Muslim; Sahih al-Bukhari ("do not revert after me")

"I have left among you that which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray: the Book of Allah. — Jabir's narration, Sahih Muslim

"And you will be asked about me — so what will you say?" They said: "We bear witness that you have conveyed the message, fulfilled the trust, and given sincere counsel." Then he ﷺ raised his forefinger toward the sky and lowered it toward the people, saying three times: "O Allah, bear witness. O Allah, bear witness. O Allah, bear witness — and let the one who is present convey it to the one who is absent." — Jabir's narration, Sahih Muslim; Sahih al-Bukhari ("let the present convey")

Hadith — the sanctity declaration, and "let the present convey"

The Prophet ﷺ declared: "No doubt your blood, property…and your honor (chastity), are sacred to one another as is the sanctity of this day of yours in this month of yours. It is incumbent on those who are present to inform those who are absent."

Sahih al-Bukhari 105

Hadith — "do not become disbelievers after me"

In the sermon's starkest line, he ﷺ warned: "Do not revert after me to disbelief, striking one another's necks."

Sahih al-Bukhari 7079

"This day I have perfected for you your religion"

On the afternoon of Arafah itself, revelation descended with words that read — as the companions understood them — like a seal upon the whole prophetic mission. Years later, a Jewish man told Umar ibn al-Khattab: had this verse been revealed to us, we would have taken its day as a festival. Umar replied that he knew exactly where and when it came down: upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Arafah, on a Friday.

Quran — revealed at Arafah on the Farewell Hajj

"…This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion…"

Quran 5:3 · Sahih al-Bukhari 45

Reports in the tafsir literature tell of companions weeping when they heard it, sensing that completion heralded parting — an instinct the Sahih collections confirm in Abu Bakr: months later in Madinah, when the Prophet ﷺ spoke of a servant whom Allah had given the choice between this world and what is with Him, it was Abu Bakr who wept, alone perceiving that the servant was the Prophet himself (Sahih al-Bukhari 3654). They were right: within three months the Prophet ﷺ had returned to Madinah, fallen ill, and passed to his Lord — and the Hajj he had just led remained, rite for rite, the template every pilgrimage since has followed.
