The Signs of the Hour

What the authentic sources actually say about the signs before the Day of Judgment — and the calm, deliberate response they are meant to produce.

The Prophet ﷺ was asked about the Hour more than once, and his answer never changed: no created being knows when it will come. What he did teach were its signs (أشراط الساعة, ashrat as-saʿah) — markers that the appointed time is drawing near. These signs are not a calendar. They were given to keep the heart awake, not to invite guesswork about dates or the matching of headlines to prophecy. This page gathers what is established in authentic reports, stated plainly and kept short.

Only Allah knows Sent near the Hour Minor signs The ten major signs The right response

Only Allah knows when it will come

The Quran closes the door on this question firmly. When people pressed the Prophet ﷺ about the timing, he was commanded to answer that its knowledge rests with Allah alone.

Quran — Luqman

"Indeed, Allah alone has knowledge of the Hour. He sends down the rain, and knows what is in the wombs. No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. Surely Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware."

31:34

Quran — al-Ahzab

"People ask you about the Hour. Say: its knowledge is only with Allah. And what will make you realise that perhaps the Hour is near?"

33:63

Elsewhere the Prophet ﷺ is told to say plainly that its coming lies with his Lord alone, and that it will fall upon the heavens and the earth suddenly (7:187). Anyone who names a year, an age, or a lifetime for the Hour has spoken beyond what Allah disclosed even to His Messenger.

The Prophet ﷺ was sent near it

⏳ "I and the Hour were sent like these two"

The Prophet ﷺ raised his forefinger and middle finger together and said that he and the Hour were sent like the two of them — meaning it is close, and that no prophet comes after him to warn again. His coming was itself among the signs.

The minor signs

The minor signs (al-ʿalamat as-sughra) are the more numerous, gradual markers. Many were foretold and have already come to pass; scholars caution against treating any single one as proof the end is upon us, since these things recur across generations. Several were listed in the famous hadith of Jibril, when the angel came in the form of a man and asked the Prophet ﷺ about its signs.

👶 The slave-woman gives birth to her mistress

Among the signs the Prophet ﷺ named: "when the slave-woman gives birth to her mistress," and "when you see the barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in constructing tall buildings." Scholars have read these as pointing to an overturning of settled social order and to sudden worldly wealth reaching those who once had nothing — without insisting on one fixed interpretation.

Refs: Sahih al-Bukhari 50; Sahih Muslim — site reader no. 1, Kitab al-Iman

📚 Knowledge lifted, ignorance spreading

He ﷺ said that among the signs of the Hour are that knowledge will be taken away and ignorance will settle in, that intoxicants will be drunk openly, and that unlawful sexual relations (zina) will become widespread. The removal of knowledge, he explained elsewhere, comes through the death of the scholars, until people take ignorant leaders who are asked and give rulings without knowledge — going astray and leading others astray.

Refs: Sahih al-Bukhari 80–81

🏗️ Barefoot shepherds competing in tall buildings

When Jibril asked the Prophet ﷺ to tell him of the signs of the Hour, part of the answer was this image — the poorest of people, herders with neither shoes nor clothing to spare, suddenly rivalling one another in raising the tallest buildings.

Hadith — from the hadith of Jibril

"…that you will find barefooted, destitute goat-herds vying with one another in the construction of magnificent buildings."

Sahih Muslim — site reader no. 1, Kitab al-Iman

In Abu Hurayrah's narration of the same encounter the wording is that "the herders of black camels vie with one another in tall buildings." The scholars read it as worldly wealth and status arriving suddenly in the hands of those once furthest from them — reported as a marker, not as praise, and not for us to pin onto any one country or skyline.

🩸 Much killing — al-harj

He ﷺ said that near the Hour knowledge will be taken away, tribulations will appear, and al-harj will increase. When he was asked what al-harj was, he moved his hand as one who strikes — killing. In another narration, alongside time passing quickly, good deeds decreasing, and miserliness being cast into hearts, the answer is spoken outright: "Killing, killing." The sign is stated plainly and left there — the Prophet ﷺ attached no date to it, and neither do we.

Refs: Sahih al-Bukhari 85; Sahih al-Bukhari 7061

💸 Earnings no longer weighed — riba spreading

He ﷺ said: "A time will come upon the people when a man will not care how he gets his wealth — whether from what is lawful or from what is unlawful." The scholars place the open spread of riba squarely within this: a society where the line between halal and haram earnings stops being asked about. Narrations that name riba as a sign in more vivid terms circulate widely, but many are weak; this established wording is enough, and it is the one we keep to.

🌙 The splitting of the moon — already witnessed

One sign is placed in the past by the Quran itself. The moon was split in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ and the companions who witnessed it, a plain miracle that the disbelievers dismissed as passing magic.

Quran — al-Qamar

"The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split."

54:1

Refs: Sahih al-Bukhari 3636

The Prophet ﷺ also spoke of time seeming to pass quickly near the end, so that a year would feel like a month and a month like a week. Signs of this kind are meant to be felt, not counted — a reminder that the world is winding down, not a puzzle to be solved.

The ten major signs

The major signs (al-ʿalamat al-kubra) are the great, unmistakable events near the very end. Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman reported that the Prophet ﷺ looked out at the companions while they were discussing the Hour and named ten signs that come before it. When the first appears, the rest follow closely, "like beads falling one after another from a string."

Infographic — Two tiers of the signs

The many gradual minor signs give way, near the very end, to ten great and unmistakable major signs — set in the order of Hudhayfah's hadith.

A two-tier diagram of the signs of the Hour. The upper tier holds the minor signs, gradual markers, many already witnessed: the Prophet, peace be upon him, sent close to the Hour, likened to two adjoining fingers; the slave-woman giving birth to her mistress; barefoot destitute shepherds competing in tall buildings; knowledge lifted and ignorance spreading; intoxicants drunk openly; unlawful sexual relations becoming widespread; the splitting of the moon, already witnessed in the Quran; and time seeming to pass quickly. These flow downward into the lower tier: the ten major signs from the hadith of Hudhayfah in Sahih Muslim 2901, which come in close succession like beads falling from a string. In order: one, the smoke, ad-dukhan, that covers the people; two, the Dajjal, the great deceiver; three, the Beast, ad-Dabbah; four, the sun rising from the west, after which no new faith is accepted; five, the descent of Isa son of Maryam, peace be upon him; six, Yajuj and Majuj, Gog and Magog; seven, a landslide in the east; eight, a landslide in the west; nine, a landslide in the Arabian Peninsula; and ten, a fire that drives the people to their place of gathering.

🕊️ The descent of ʿIsa (Jesus), peace be upon him

Among the major signs is that ʿIsa ibn Maryam will descend as a just ruler. The Prophet ﷺ said he will break the cross, kill the swine, and abolish the jizyah, and that wealth will be so abundant no one will accept it. He rules by the revelation of Muhammad ﷺ, not with a new law — a point that answers much of the confusion around his return.

The Mahdī

Alongside the great signs, the authentic Sunnah speaks of a rightly-guided man — al-Mahdī, "the guided one" — from the family of the Prophet ﷺ, who appears near the end of time and through whom Allah restores justice to a world filled with its opposite. He is not one of the ten signs in Hudhayfah's hadith, and he is not named in the two Sahihs, but the reports about him in the Sunan collections are authentic and were accepted by the scholars of the Sunnah. A report from Umm Salamah in the same chapter of Sunan Abi Dawud specifies his line: from the Prophet's ﷺ household, of the descendants of Fāṭimah.

Hadith — Sunan Abi Dawud

"Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: If only one day of this world remained. Allah would lengthen that day (according to the version of Za'idah), till He raised up in it a man who belongs to me or to my family whose father's name is the same as my father's, who will fill the earth with equity and justice as it has been filled with oppression and tyranny (according to the version of Fitr). Sufyan's version says: The world will not pass away before the Arabs are ruled by a man of my family whose name will be the same as mine. Abu Dawud said: The version of 'Umar and Abu Bakr is the same as that of Sufyan"

Hadith — Sunan Abi Dawud

"Narrated AbuSa'id al-Khudri: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The Mahdi will be of my stock, and will have a broad forehead a prominent nose. He will fill the earth will equity and justice as it was filled with oppression and tyranny, and he will rule for seven years"

Sunan Abi Dawud 4285 · graded hasan (al-Albani)

Notice what the texts actually give: a lineage, a name, a description, and a task. They give no year and no method by which anyone could verify a claim in advance. The Mahdī will be known by what Allah brings about through him — justice filling the earth — not by an announcement.

⚠️ The rule on this page extends to Mahdī claims

Everything said on this page about naming individuals and fixing dates applies here with full force:

Protection from the Dajjāl

Every prophet warned his nation about the Dajjāl, and the Prophet ﷺ warned his ummah in turn — and he did not leave the believers unarmed. Two protections are established in the authentic Sunnah, and both are within reach of every Muslim: a portion of the Quran to memorize, and a supplication already built into the daily prayer.

📖 Memorize the opening of Sūrat al-Kahf

The Prophet ﷺ taught that committing the first ten āyāt of Sūrat al-Kahf to memory is itself a shield against the Dajjāl's trial.

Hadith — Sahih Muslim

"If anyone learns by heart the first ten verses of the Surah al-Kahf, he will be protected from the Dajjal."

Sahih Muslim — site reader no. 1775, Kitab Salat al-Musafirin

These opening āyāt establish that Allah has no son and no partner — the very claims the Dajjāl's deception rests on. Begin memorizing them in the Quran section.

Refs: Sahih Muslim — site reader no. 1775, Kitab Salat al-Musafirin

🤲 Seek refuge in the final tashahhud

In every prayer, before the closing salām, the Prophet ﷺ instructed the believer to seek refuge from four things — and the trial of the Dajjāl is named among them.

Hadith — Sahih Muslim

"When any one of you utters tashahhud (in prayer) he must seek refuge with Allah from four (trials) and should thus say: 'O Allah! I seek refuge with Thee from the torment of the Hell, from the torment of the grave, from the trial of life and death and from the evil of the trial of Masih al-Dajjal' (Antichrist)."

Sahih Muslim — site reader no. 1224, Kitab al-Masajid

This duʿāʾ, with its wording and transliteration, is collected with the other prayers of protection in Duas & Dhikr.

⚠️ Keep to what is established

A great deal of popular material about the end times is weak, fabricated, or pure speculation. To stay on firm ground:

What a believer is meant to do with this

The point of this knowledge is not fear, prediction, or the thrill of decoding signs. It is preparation. Whatever the world's clock reads, your own hour is your death — and for each person, that is the Hour that matters. When a bedouin asked the Prophet ﷺ about the Hour, he turned the question around and asked, "What have you prepared for it?"

✅ The right response

Let the signs move you toward readiness, not anxiety:

The signs were given as a mercy: a reminder to prepare while there is still time. The wise believer does not count the days to the Hour — he readies himself for his own.
