Sahih al-Bukhari — hadith #5762–#5786
The verbatim English translation of each narration. Use the interactive reader for search and themes.
Sahih al-Bukhari uses the standard numbering. A Bukhari number here is the same narration you will find under that number on sunnah.com or in a printed edition.
Sahih Muslim is different, and this matters. Our Muslim numbers are site reader numbers — a running count through this translation, in which each chain of narration is listed separately. That gives about 7,458 entries where the standard numbering has roughly 3,000. A Sahih Muslim number on this site will not find the same hadith on sunnah.com, and following it there will usually land you on a different narration entirely. To check a Muslim narration elsewhere, search for its wording rather than its number. We state this plainly because a number that looks authoritative and is not is worse than no number at all.
The themes are our own navigational grouping, and these translations are no substitute for study of the Arabic with qualified scholars (see our editorial policy). A small number of entries with no translated text are omitted rather than guessed at.

One day or one night he was with us, he invoked Allah and invoked for a long period, and then said, "O `Aisha! Do you know that Allah has instructed me concerning the matter I have asked him about? Two men came to me and one of them sat near my head and the other near my feet. One of them said to his companion, "What is the disease of this man?" The other replied, "He is under the effect of magic.' The first one asked, 'Who has worked the magic on him?' The other replied, "Labid bin Al-A'sam.' The first one asked, 'What material did he use?' The other replied, 'A comb and the hairs stuck to it and the skin of pollen of a male date palm.' The first one asked, 'Where is that?' The other replied, '(That is) in the well of Dharwan;' " So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) along with some of his companions went there and came back saying, "O `Aisha, the color of its water is like the infusion of Henna leaves. The tops of the date-palm trees near it are like the heads of the devils." I asked. "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)? Why did you not show it (to the people)?" Did you take those materials out of the pollen skin?" He said, 'No! As for me Allah has healed me and cured me and I was afraid that (by Showing that to the people) I would spread evil among them when he ordered that the well be filled up with earth, and it was filled up with earth

'Aishah reported that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) held a newborn child and performed tahnik—an Islamic practice where a date is softened in the mouth and its juice placed into the infant's mouth for blessing and nourishment. During this act, the child urinated on the Prophet's garment. Rather than showing displeasure, he calmly requested water and washed away the urine from his clothing.
This hadith is narrated by 'Aishah, the Prophet's wife, who witnessed this event in the household. Tahnik was a common practice among Arabs and was encouraged by Islamic tradition as a means of blessing newborns. The incident illustrates the Prophet's gentle and patient demeanor, particularly toward children and inevitable accidents. This account appears in Sahih al-Bukhari, one of the most authoritative collections of prophetic traditions in Sunni Islam, indicating its strong authenticity.
Muslims should adopt the Prophet's compassion and forbearance when dealing with children and their natural needs. The hadith demonstrates that purity and cleanliness can be maintained without harsh reactions to accidents—a practical reminder for parents and caregivers that patience and gentleness are Islamic virtues. Additionally, it validates the practice of tahnik as a sunna (recommended practice) for newborns when welcomed into a Muslim family. The example teaches that dignity and cleanliness need not conflict with mercy and understanding toward the vulnerable.
A Bedouin stood and posed a parable: camels crossing sand resemble deer, but when a diseased (mangy) camel joins a healthy herd, all become infected with mange (a contagious skin disease). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) responded with a logical question: "Then who transmitted the disease to the first camel?" The Prophet's reply challenges the Bedouin's implicit reasoning by pointing out that if infection requires contact with a diseased animal, the origin of disease in the first camel remains unexplained.
This exchange occurs in an ordinary setting where a Bedouin—a nomadic Arab—presents a thought problem to the Prophet (peace be upon him). The hadith is preserved in Sahih al-Bukhari, Islam's most authentic collection. Scholars understand this was likely a debate or teaching moment about causation and Divine will. The Bedouin may have been raising questions about predestination (qadar) or the limits of human reasoning, common philosophical concerns in early Islamic discourse.
This hadith teaches Muslims to think critically about causal reasoning and to recognize the limits of human explanation. We should not assume that observed patterns of cause and effect fully explain all phenomena—ultimate causation belongs to Allah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) encourages intellectual humility: when tracing causes backward, we eventually reach realities that transcend material observation. For believers today, this reinforces that while taking reasonable precautions (like quarantining sick animals) is proper, we must ultimately trust Allah's wisdom and acknowledge that He is the true cause behind all events.
Narrated Anas bin Malik:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "No 'Adwa nor Tiyara; but I like Fal." They said, "What is the Fal?" He said, "A good word

(When they were gathered) Allah's Apostle said to them, "I am going to ask you about something; will you tell me the truth?" They replied, "Yes, O Abal-Qasim!" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to them, "Who is your father?" They said, "Our father is so-and-so." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "You have told a lie. for your father is so-and-so," They said, "No doubt, you have said the truth and done the correct thing." He again said to them, "If I ask you about something; will you tell me the truth?" They replied, "Yes, O Abal-Qasim! And if we should tell a lie you will know it as you have known it regarding our father," Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) then asked, "Who are the people of the (Hell) Fire?" They replied, "We will remain in the (Hell) Fire for a while and then you (Muslims) will replace us in it" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to them. ''You will abide in it with ignominy. By Allah, we shall never replace you in it at all." Then he asked them again, "If I ask you something, will you tell me the truth?" They replied, "Yes." He asked. "Have you put the poison in this roasted sheep?" They replied, "Yes," He asked, "What made you do that?" They replied, "We intended to learn if you were a liar in which case we would be relieved from you, and if you were a prophet then it would not harm you
Narrated Abu Huraira:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever purposely throws himself from a mountain and kills himself, will be in the (Hell) Fire falling down into it and abiding therein perpetually forever; and whoever drinks poison and kills himself with it, he will be carrying his poison in his hand and drinking it in the (Hell) Fire wherein he will abide eternally forever; and whoever kills himself with an iron weapon, will be carrying that weapon in his hand and stabbing his `Abdomen with it in the (Hell) Fire wherein he will abide eternally forever

Narrated Abu Juhaifa:I saw Bilal bringing a short spear (or stick) and fixing it in the ground, and then he proclaimed the Iqama of the prayer, and I saw Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) coming out, wearing a cloak with its sleeves rolled up. He then offered a two-rak`at prayer while facing the stick, and I saw the people and animals passing in front of him beyond the stick
