Sahih al-Bukhari — hadith #6062–#6086

The verbatim English translation of each narration. Use the interactive reader for search and themes.

Please read — the two collections are numbered differently. These are the verbatim English translation of each narration — Sahih al-Bukhari via the Muhsin Khan translation, Sahih Muslim via the Abdul Hamid Siddiqui translation.

Sahih al-Bukhari uses the standard numbering. A Bukhari number here is the same narration you will find under that number on sunnah.com or in a printed edition.

Sahih Muslim is different, and this matters. Our Muslim numbers are site reader numbers — a running count through this translation, in which each chain of narration is listed separately. That gives about 7,458 entries where the standard numbering has roughly 3,000. A Sahih Muslim number on this site will not find the same hadith on sunnah.com, and following it there will usually land you on a different narration entirely. To check a Muslim narration elsewhere, search for its wording rather than its number. We state this plainly because a number that looks authoritative and is not is worse than no number at all.

The themes are our own navigational grouping, and these translations are no substitute for study of the Arabic with qualified scholars (see our editorial policy). A small number of entries with no translated text are omitted rather than guessed at.

Allah has instructed me regarding a matter about which I had asked Him. There came to me two men, one of them sat near my feet and the other near my head. The one near my feet, asked the one near my head (pointing at me), 'What is wrong with this man? The latter replied, 'He is under the effect of magic.' The first one asked, 'Who had worked magic on him?' The other replied, 'Lubaid bin Asam.' The first one asked, 'What material (did he use)?' The other replied, 'The skin of the pollen of a male date tree with a comb and the hair stuck to it, kept under a stone in the well of Dharwan."' Then the Prophet (ﷺ) went to that well and said, "This is the same well which was shown to me in the dream. The tops of its date-palm trees look like the heads of the devils, and its water looks like the Henna infusion." Then the Prophet (ﷺ) ordered that those things be taken out. I said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Won't you disclose (the magic object)?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Allah has cured me and I hate to circulate the evil among the people." `Aisha added, "(The magician) Lubaid bin Asam was a man from Bani Zuraiq, an ally of the Jews

Narrated Abu Huraira:I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying. "All the sins of my followers will be forgiven except those of the Mujahirin (those who commit a sin openly or disclose their sins to the people). An example of such disclosure is that a person commits a sin at night and though Allah screens it from the public, then he comes in the morning, and says, 'O so-and-so, I did such-and-such (evil) deed yesterday,' though he spent his night screened by his Lord (none knowing about his sin) and in the morning he removes Allah's screen from himself

Narrated `Aisha:(the wife of the Prophet) that she was told that `Abdullah bin Az-Zubair (on hearing that she was selling or giving something as a gift) said, "By Allah, if `Aisha does not give up this, I will declare her incompetent to dispose of her wealth." I said, "Did he (`Abdullah bin Az-Zubair) say so?" They (people) said, "Yes." `Aisha said, "I vow to Allah that I will never speak to Ibn Az-Zubair." When this desertion lasted long, `Abdullah bin Az-Zubair sought intercession with her, but she said, "By Allah, I will not accept the intercession of anyone for him, and will not commit a sin by breaking my vow." When this state of affairs was prolonged on Ibn Az-Zubair (he felt it hard on him), he said to Al- Miswar bin Makhrama and `Abdur-Rahman bin Al-Aswad bin 'Abd Yaghuth, who were from the tribe of Bani Zahra, "I beseech you, by Allah, to let me enter upon `Aisha, for it is unlawful for her to vow to cut the relation with me." So Al-Miswar and `Abdur-Rahman, wrapping their sheets around themselves, asked `Aisha's permission saying, "Peace and Allah's Mercy and Blessings be upon you! Shall we come in?" `Aisha said, "Come in." They said, "All of us?" She said, "Yes, come in all of you," not knowing that Ibn Az-Zubair was also with them. So when they entered, Ibn Az-Zubair entered the screened place and got hold of `Aisha and started requesting her to excuse him, and wept. Al-Miswar and `Abdur Rahman also started requesting her to speak to him and to accept his repentance. They said (to her), "The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade what you know of deserting (not speaking to your Muslim Brethren), for it is unlawful for any Muslim not to talk to his brother for more than three nights (days)." So when they increased their reminding her (of the superiority of having good relation with Kith and kin, and of excusing others' sins), and brought her down to a critical situation, she started reminding them, and wept, saying, "I have made a vow, and (the question of) vow is a difficult one." They (Al-Miswar and `Abdur-Rahman) persisted in their appeal till she spoke with `Abdullah bin Az-Zubair and she manumitted forty slaves as an expiation for her vow. Later on, whenever she remembered her vow, she used to weep so much that her veil used to become wet with her tears

#6074Dua & Dhikr
Meaning

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) instructed Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib on the proper way to prepare for sleep. He should perform ablution (wudu—the ritual washing before prayer), lie on his right side, and recite a specific supplication (dua) that affirms submission to Allah, entrusts all affairs to Him, seeks His protection, and expresses faith in His revealed Book and His Prophet. The supplication concludes with the assurance that whoever dies after reciting these words will die upon Islam. When Al-Bara' attempted to memorize the dua, he slightly altered the wording by saying "apostle" instead of "prophet," and the Prophet gently corrected him to use the proper term "prophet."

Context

This hadith, narrated by Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib (a Companion of the Prophet), illustrates the Islamic emphasis on beginning and ending the day with remembrance of Allah and conscious submission to His will. The correction regarding terminology—using "nabiyy" (prophet) rather than "rasul" (apostle/messenger)—shows the Prophet's care for precise language in worship and supplication, even in small details. This teaching demonstrates that bedtime is not merely a mundane moment but an opportunity for spiritual preparation and reliance upon Allah.

Lesson

Muslims should establish a thoughtful bedtime routine that includes ritual purification and spiritual remembrance, recognizing that sleep is akin to death and deserves conscious preparation. The practice of reciting this dua before sleep cultivates constant awareness of Allah's sovereignty and strengthens one's faith during vulnerable moments. Attention to accurate wording in supplication—as the Prophet's correction emphasizes—reflects respect for Islamic practice and ensures our worship is conducted with precision and sincere intention.

#6075Death & Burial
Meaning

When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) lay down to sleep, he would recite the supplication "Bismika amutu wa ahya" (In Your name I die and I live), invoking God's protection during sleep by placing himself under divine care. Upon waking, he would say "Al-hamdu li-llāhil-ladhī ahyānā ba'da mā amātnā wa ilayhi-n-nushūr" (All praise belongs to God who gave us life after death and to Him is the return), acknowledging that sleep is like death and awakening is a revival, and expressing gratitude for being restored to life.

Context

Hudhaifa ibn al-Yamān, a prominent Companion, narrated these bedtime and morning supplications that the Prophet (peace be upon him) regularly practiced. This hadith appears in Sahih al-Bukhari as an authentic teaching on personal devotional habits. These practices reflect the Islamic understanding that sleep resembles death—both are states in which the soul is separated from full consciousness of the physical world—and that waking is a sign of God's mercy and power. The Prophet (peace be upon him) exemplified constant remembrance of God (dhikr) throughout all states and times of day.

Lesson

Muslims should establish regular, conscious routines of supplication when retiring to sleep and upon waking, recognizing these as opportunities for spiritual awareness and gratitude. By reciting these or similar supplications, believers place themselves under God's protection during vulnerable moments and acknowledge their dependence on His mercy. This practice teaches mindfulness of God's control over life and death, and cultivates a heart that is grateful and aware, transforming ordinary daily transitions into moments of worship and connection with the Divine.
