The Prophet ﷺ died in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of 11 AH in the chamber of ʿĀʾishah, aged sixty-three, and was buried in that very spot. Some Companions, ʿUmar among them, could not accept the news; Abū Bakr came, uncovered the Prophet's face and kissed him, then addressed the people: "Whoever used to worship Muhammad — Muhammad has died; and whoever used to worship Allah — Allah is Ever-Living and never dies," and he recited the verse "Muhammad is no more than a messenger; messengers have passed away before him." ʿUmar said it was as though he had never heard the verse until Abū Bakr recited it, and his legs gave way beneath him. The Companions then gathered at the Saqīfah of Banū Sāʿidah and pledged allegiance to Abū Bakr, so the ummah was not left a single day without a leader — a foundational principle in Sunni political fiqh.
