Before prophethood the Prophet ﷺ used to withdraw to the Cave of Ḥirāʾ to worship, and at the age of forty the angel Jibrīl came to him there, pressed him three times and commanded, "Read!", revealing the opening verses of Sūrat al-ʿAlaq: "Read in the name of your Lord who created" (Qurʾān 96:1–5). He returned home with his heart trembling and said, "Cover me, cover me," and Khadījah reassured him and took him to Waraqah ibn Nawfal, who recognised that the same angel who had come to Mūsā had come to him, and told him his people would drive him out. Revelation then paused for a period (fatrat al-waḥy) before resuming with "O you who covers himself, arise and warn" (Qurʾān 74:1–5), which began the public mission. This is the sound, detailed account narrated by ʿĀʾishah and by Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, and it establishes that the Qurʾān came from Allah through the angel, not from the Prophet's own composition.
