Is everything in Musnad Ahmad authentic?

No. The Musnad is arranged by Companion rather than by topic and gathers some twenty-seven thousand reports including repetitions; Imam Ahmad selected them from a far larger body he had memorised, but he did not restrict himself to the authentic alone, so it contains sahih, hasan and da'if narrations. A small amount of additional material was also added by his son 'Abdullah and by his student al-Qati'i, which is why the compiler of a given report must be identified before judging it. Scholars therefore grade its hadith individually — the modern edition supervised by Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut supplies a ruling on each report, and earlier critics such as Ibn Hajar defended the collection in al-Qawl al-Musaddad against the charge that fabrications had entered it, while still acknowledging weak material in it. Imam Ahmad's own statement that he compiled it as a reference point to which people should return when they differ over a report shows its immense value, not a blanket authentication of every chain in it.
