What about people who say they follow the Quran only and reject hadith?

This position collapses under the Quran itself, because Allah commands obedience to the Messenger alongside obedience to Himself, states that whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah, orders us to take whatever the Messenger gives us and abstain from what he forbids, and says that the Quran was sent down to the Prophet precisely so that he could make clear to mankind what was revealed to them. Practically, no one can pray, fast, pay zakat or perform hajj from the Quran alone, since the Quran commands salah without specifying the number of its units, its form, or the precise times — all of which reached us only through the Sunnah. Therefore the scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah hold that rejecting the Sunnah as a binding source is in reality a rejection of the Quran that commands us to follow it, and this doctrine lies outside the way of the Salaf. That said, we do not pass a verdict on any particular individual, who may be ignorant, confused or misled; the obligation is to invite him with wisdom and good instruction, teach him, and remove his doubts.
