The Dajjal is a real human being who will emerge near the end of time claiming divinity; he is blind in one eye, with the word "kafir" written between his eyes which every believer will read whether literate or not, and Allah will permit extraordinary trials at his hands as a test. Every prophet warned his people of him — the Prophet ﷺ described him at length in the hadith of al-Nawwas ibn Sam'an (Muslim 2937) — and he will be unable to enter Makkah or Madinah, and will finally be killed by 'Isa ibn Maryam after his descent. The Prophet ﷺ also taught the means of protection: memorising ten verses from the beginning of Surat al-Kahf, and seeking refuge from his trial in the last part of every prayer. He is not a symbol or a metaphor for an ideology; belief in him is part of believing in the unseen that the Messenger ﷺ conveyed.
