Are women allowed to walk in the funeral procession and go to the graveyard?

Umm Atiyyah said, "We were forbidden from following the funeral procession, but it was not made binding upon us" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1278; Sahih Muslim 938), so the majority of scholars hold that it is disliked (makruh) for women to accompany the bier to the grave rather than forbidden outright. As for visiting graves generally, the Prophet ﷺ said, "I had forbidden you from visiting graves, so visit them" (Sahih Muslim 977), and scholars differ over women: many permit an occasional visit for the reminder of the Hereafter, while others restrict it because of the narration cursing "women who visit graves" (Jami at-Tirmidhi 1056), which those who permit understand as women who do so habitually or with wailing. All agree that if a woman does go she must avoid wailing, unnecessary mixing, and anything that contradicts patient acceptance of Allah's decree.
