Surah Ad-Dukhan — The Smoke

حمٓ ﴿١﴾

Ha-Mim. 44:1

وَٱلْكِتَـٰبِ ٱلْمُبِينِ ﴿٢﴾

By the Book that makes things clear;- 44:2

إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ فِى لَيْلَةٍۢ مُّبَـٰرَكَةٍ ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُنذِرِينَ ﴿٣﴾

We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). 44:3

فِيهَا يُفْرَقُ كُلُّ أَمْرٍ حَكِيمٍ ﴿٤﴾

In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 44:4

أَمْرًۭا مِّنْ عِندِنَآ ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُرْسِلِينَ ﴿٥﴾

By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), 44:5

رَحْمَةًۭ مِّن رَّبِّكَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ﴿٦﴾

As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 44:6

رَبِّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ ۖ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِينَ ﴿٧﴾

The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 44:7

لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ يُحْىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ ۖ رَبُّكُمْ وَرَبُّ ءَابَآئِكُمُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ﴿٨﴾

There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. 44:8

بَلْ هُمْ فِى شَكٍّۢ يَلْعَبُونَ ﴿٩﴾

Yet they play about in doubt. 44:9

فَٱرْتَقِبْ يَوْمَ تَأْتِى ٱلسَّمَآءُ بِدُخَانٍۢ مُّبِينٍۢ ﴿١٠﴾

Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, 44:10

يَغْشَى ٱلنَّاسَ ۖ هَـٰذَا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌۭ ﴿١١﴾

Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 44:11

رَّبَّنَا ٱكْشِفْ عَنَّا ٱلْعَذَابَ إِنَّا مُؤْمِنُونَ ﴿١٢﴾

(They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" 44:12

أَنَّىٰ لَهُمُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ وَقَدْ جَآءَهُمْ رَسُولٌۭ مُّبِينٌۭ ﴿١٣﴾

How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- 44:13

ثُمَّ تَوَلَّوْا۟ عَنْهُ وَقَالُوا۟ مُعَلَّمٌۭ مَّجْنُونٌ ﴿١٤﴾

Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 44:14

إِنَّا كَاشِفُوا۟ ٱلْعَذَابِ قَلِيلًا ۚ إِنَّكُمْ عَآئِدُونَ ﴿١٥﴾

We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 44:15

يَوْمَ نَبْطِشُ ٱلْبَطْشَةَ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ إِنَّا مُنتَقِمُونَ ﴿١٦﴾

One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! 44:16

۞ وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَجَآءَهُمْ رَسُولٌۭ كَرِيمٌ ﴿١٧﴾

We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 44:17

أَنْ أَدُّوٓا۟ إِلَىَّ عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌۭ ﴿١٨﴾

Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust; 44:18

وَأَن لَّا تَعْلُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّىٓ ءَاتِيكُم بِسُلْطَـٰنٍۢ مُّبِينٍۢ ﴿١٩﴾

"And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. 44:19

وَإِنِّى عُذْتُ بِرَبِّى وَرَبِّكُمْ أَن تَرْجُمُونِ ﴿٢٠﴾

"For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. 44:20

وَإِن لَّمْ تُؤْمِنُوا۟ لِى فَٱعْتَزِلُونِ ﴿٢١﴾

"If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." 44:21

فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ قَوْمٌۭ مُّجْرِمُونَ ﴿٢٢﴾

(But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 44:22

فَأَسْرِ بِعِبَادِى لَيْلًا إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ ﴿٢٣﴾

(The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. 44:23

وَٱتْرُكِ ٱلْبَحْرَ رَهْوًا ۖ إِنَّهُمْ جُندٌۭ مُّغْرَقُونَ ﴿٢٤﴾

"And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned." 44:24

كَمْ تَرَكُوا۟ مِن جَنَّـٰتٍۢ وَعُيُونٍۢ ﴿٢٥﴾

How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 44:25

وَزُرُوعٍۢ وَمَقَامٍۢ كَرِيمٍۢ ﴿٢٦﴾

And corn-fields and noble buildings, 44:26

وَنَعْمَةٍۢ كَانُوا۟ فِيهَا فَـٰكِهِينَ ﴿٢٧﴾

And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! 44:27

كَذَٰلِكَ ۖ وَأَوْرَثْنَـٰهَا قَوْمًا ءَاخَرِينَ ﴿٢٨﴾

Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! 44:28

فَمَا بَكَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ وَٱلْأَرْضُ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُنظَرِينَ ﴿٢٩﴾

And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). 44:29

وَلَقَدْ نَجَّيْنَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ مِنَ ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلْمُهِينِ ﴿٣٠﴾

We did deliver aforetime the Children of Israel from humiliating Punishment, 44:30

مِن فِرْعَوْنَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَالِيًۭا مِّنَ ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ ﴿٣١﴾

Inflicted by Pharaoh, for he was arrogant (even) among inordinate transgressors. 44:31

وَلَقَدِ ٱخْتَرْنَـٰهُمْ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ عَلَى ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ ﴿٣٢﴾

And We chose them aforetime above the nations, knowingly, 44:32

وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ مَا فِيهِ بَلَـٰٓؤٌۭا۟ مُّبِينٌ ﴿٣٣﴾

And granted them Signs in which there was a manifest trial 44:33

إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَيَقُولُونَ ﴿٣٤﴾

As to these (Quraish), they say forsooth: 44:34

إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّا مَوْتَتُنَا ٱلْأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُنشَرِينَ ﴿٣٥﴾

"There is nothing beyond our first death, and we shall not be raised again. 44:35

فَأْتُوا۟ بِـَٔابَآئِنَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ ﴿٣٦﴾

"Then bring (back) our forefathers, if what ye say is true!" 44:36

أَهُمْ خَيْرٌ أَمْ قَوْمُ تُبَّعٍۢ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ أَهْلَكْنَـٰهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ مُجْرِمِينَ ﴿٣٧﴾

What! Are they better than the people of Tubba and those who were before them? We destroyed them because they were guilty of sin. 44:37

وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا لَـٰعِبِينَ ﴿٣٨﴾

We created not the heavens, the earth, and all between them, merely in (idle) sport: 44:38

مَا خَلَقْنَـٰهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ﴿٣٩﴾

We created them not except for just ends: but most of them do not understand. 44:39

إِنَّ يَوْمَ ٱلْفَصْلِ مِيقَـٰتُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ ﴿٤٠﴾

Verily the Day of sorting out is the time appointed for all of them,- 44:40

يَوْمَ لَا يُغْنِى مَوْلًى عَن مَّوْلًۭى شَيْـًۭٔا وَلَا هُمْ يُنصَرُونَ ﴿٤١﴾

The Day when no protector can avail his client in aught, and no help can they receive, 44:41

إِلَّا مَن رَّحِمَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ ﴿٤٢﴾

Except such as receive Allah's Mercy: for He is Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 44:42

إِنَّ شَجَرَتَ ٱلزَّقُّومِ ﴿٤٣﴾

Verily the tree of Zaqqum 44:43

طَعَامُ ٱلْأَثِيمِ ﴿٤٤﴾

Will be the food of the Sinful,- 44:44

كَٱلْمُهْلِ يَغْلِى فِى ٱلْبُطُونِ ﴿٤٥﴾

Like molten brass; it will boil in their insides. 44:45

كَغَلْىِ ٱلْحَمِيمِ ﴿٤٦﴾

Like the boiling of scalding water. 44:46

خُذُوهُ فَٱعْتِلُوهُ إِلَىٰ سَوَآءِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ ﴿٤٧﴾

(A voice will cry: "Seize ye him and drag him into the midst of the Blazing Fire! 44:47

ثُمَّ صُبُّوا۟ فَوْقَ رَأْسِهِۦ مِنْ عَذَابِ ٱلْحَمِيمِ ﴿٤٨﴾

"Then pour over his head the Penalty of Boiling Water, 44:48

ذُقْ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْكَرِيمُ ﴿٤٩﴾

"Taste thou (this)! Truly wast thou mighty, full of honour! 44:49

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا مَا كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَمْتَرُونَ ﴿٥٠﴾

"Truly this is what ye used to doubt!" 44:50

إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى مَقَامٍ أَمِينٍۢ ﴿٥١﴾

As to the Righteous (they will be) in a position of Security, 44:51

فِى جَنَّـٰتٍۢ وَعُيُونٍۢ ﴿٥٢﴾

Among Gardens and Springs; 44:52

يَلْبَسُونَ مِن سُندُسٍۢ وَإِسْتَبْرَقٍۢ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِينَ ﴿٥٣﴾

Dressed in fine silk and in rich brocade, they will face each other; 44:53

كَذَٰلِكَ وَزَوَّجْنَـٰهُم بِحُورٍ عِينٍۢ ﴿٥٤﴾

So; and We shall join them to fair women with beautiful, big, and lustrous eyes. 44:54

يَدْعُونَ فِيهَا بِكُلِّ فَـٰكِهَةٍ ءَامِنِينَ ﴿٥٥﴾

There can they call for every kind of fruit in peace and security; 44:55

لَا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا ٱلْمَوْتَ إِلَّا ٱلْمَوْتَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ ۖ وَوَقَىٰهُمْ عَذَابَ ٱلْجَحِيمِ ﴿٥٦﴾

Nor will they there taste Death, except the first death; and He will preserve them from the Penalty of the Blazing Fire,- 44:56

فَضْلًۭا مِّن رَّبِّكَ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ ﴿٥٧﴾

As a Bounty from thy Lord! that will be the supreme achievement! 44:57

فَإِنَّمَا يَسَّرْنَـٰهُ بِلِسَانِكَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ ﴿٥٨﴾

Verily, We have made this (Qur'an) easy, in thy tongue, in order that they may give heed. 44:58

فَٱرْتَقِبْ إِنَّهُم مُّرْتَقِبُونَ ﴿٥٩﴾

So wait thou and watch; for they (too) are waiting. 44:59
