Surah Al-Muddaththir — The Cloaked One

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ ﴿١﴾

O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 74:1

قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ ﴿٢﴾

Arise and deliver thy warning! 74:2

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ ﴿٣﴾

And thy Lord do thou magnify! 74:3

وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ ﴿٤﴾

And thy garments keep free from stain! 74:4

وَٱلرُّجْزَ فَٱهْجُرْ ﴿٥﴾

And all abomination shun! 74:5

وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ ﴿٦﴾

Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 74:6

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصْبِرْ ﴿٧﴾

But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! 74:7

فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِى ٱلنَّاقُورِ ﴿٨﴾

Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 74:8

فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ ﴿٩﴾

That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 74:9

عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍۢ ﴿١٠﴾

Far from easy for those without Faith. 74:10

ذَرْنِى وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًۭا ﴿١١﴾

Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 74:11

وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُۥ مَالًۭا مَّمْدُودًۭا ﴿١٢﴾

To whom I granted resources in abundance, 74:12

وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًۭا ﴿١٣﴾

And sons to be by his side!- 74:13

وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمْهِيدًۭا ﴿١٤﴾

To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 74:14

ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ ﴿١٥﴾

Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 74:15

كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا عَنِيدًۭا ﴿١٦﴾

By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 74:16

سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا ﴿١٧﴾

Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 74:17

إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ ﴿١٨﴾

For he thought and he plotted;- 74:18

فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ ﴿١٩﴾

And woe to him! How he plotted!- 74:19

ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ ﴿٢٠﴾

Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 74:20

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ ﴿٢١﴾

Then he looked round; 74:21

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ ﴿٢٢﴾

Then he frowned and he scowled; 74:22

ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ ﴿٢٣﴾

Then he turned back and was haughty; 74:23

فَقَالَ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌۭ يُؤْثَرُ ﴿٢٤﴾

Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 74:24

إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوْلُ ٱلْبَشَرِ ﴿٢٥﴾

"This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 74:25

سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ ﴿٢٦﴾

Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 74:26

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ ﴿٢٧﴾

And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 74:27

لَا تُبْقِى وَلَا تَذَرُ ﴿٢٨﴾

Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- 74:28

لَوَّاحَةٌۭ لِّلْبَشَرِ ﴿٢٩﴾

Darkening and changing the colour of man! 74:29

عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ ﴿٣٠﴾

Over it are Nineteen. 74:30

وَمَا جَعَلْنَآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰٓئِكَةًۭ ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةًۭ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَيَزْدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِيمَـٰنًۭا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌۭ وَٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلًۭا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِىَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ ﴿٣١﴾

And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 74:31

كَلَّا وَٱلْقَمَرِ ﴿٣٢﴾

Nay, verily: By the Moon, 74:32

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ ﴿٣٣﴾

And by the Night as it retreateth, 74:33

وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَآ أَسْفَرَ ﴿٣٤﴾

And by the Dawn as it shineth forth,- 74:34

إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى ٱلْكُبَرِ ﴿٣٥﴾

This is but one of the mighty (portents), 74:35

نَذِيرًۭا لِّلْبَشَرِ ﴿٣٦﴾

A warning to mankind,- 74:36

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ ﴿٣٧﴾

To any of you that chooses to press forward, or to follow behind;- 74:37

كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ ﴿٣٨﴾

Every soul will be (held) in pledge for its deeds. 74:38

إِلَّآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلْيَمِينِ ﴿٣٩﴾

Except the Companions of the Right Hand. 74:39

فِى جَنَّـٰتٍۢ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ ﴿٤٠﴾

(They will be) in Gardens (of Delight): they will question each other, 74:40

عَنِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ ﴿٤١﴾

And (ask) of the Sinners: 74:41

مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِى سَقَرَ ﴿٤٢﴾

"What led you into Hell Fire?" 74:42

قَالُوا۟ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ ﴿٤٣﴾

They will say: "We were not of those who prayed; 74:43

وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ ٱلْمِسْكِينَ ﴿٤٤﴾

"Nor were we of those who fed the indigent; 74:44

وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلْخَآئِضِينَ ﴿٤٥﴾

"But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers; 74:45

وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ ﴿٤٦﴾

"And we used to deny the Day of Judgment, 74:46

حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلْيَقِينُ ﴿٤٧﴾

"Until there came to us (the Hour) that is certain." 74:47

فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَـٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِينَ ﴿٤٨﴾

Then will no intercession of (any) intercessors profit them. 74:48

فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ ٱلتَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ ﴿٤٩﴾

Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from admonition?- 74:49

كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌۭ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌۭ ﴿٥٠﴾

As if they were affrighted asses, 74:50

فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍۭ ﴿٥١﴾

Fleeing from a lion! 74:51

بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍۢ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًۭا مُّنَشَّرَةًۭ ﴿٥٢﴾

Forsooth, each one of them wants to be given scrolls (of revelation) spread out! 74:52

كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ ﴿٥٣﴾

By no means! But they fear not the Hereafter, 74:53

كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذْكِرَةٌۭ ﴿٥٤﴾

Nay, this surely is an admonition: 74:54

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ ﴿٥٥﴾

Let any who will, keep it in remembrance! 74:55

وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ هُوَ أَهْلُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ﴿٥٦﴾

But none will keep it in remembrance except as Allah wills: He is the Lord of Righteousness, and the Lord of Forgiveness. 74:56
