What does Islam say about giving or taking bribes (rishwah) in business and dealings?

Bribery is forbidden and is counted among the major sins, whether one pays a bribe to obtain what he is not entitled to or takes one to grant it. ʿAbdullah ibn ʿAmr reported: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cursed the one who gives a bribe and the one who takes a bribe." This covers payments to secure an unfair advantage, to have a wrongful ruling passed, or to jump ahead of others' rightful claims, and it corrupts trust in commerce and public office alike. A payment made purely to recover a right that is being unjustly withheld, with no other lawful recourse, is discussed differently by some scholars, with the sin resting on the one who unlawfully demanded it.
