Q&A · Death & Afterlife

Can the dead hear the living?

The dead have a limited perception that Allah grants in the Barzakh: the Prophet ﷺ said the deceased hears the footfall of the people as they leave his grave, and he addressed the slain of Badr by name saying they heard him. However, this is not a general, reliable hearing the living may depend on, and Allah says, "You cannot make those in the graves hear" (35:22) and "You cannot make the dead hear" (27:80) — verses ʿĀʾishah cited to show the dead do not respond as the living do. The balanced position of Ahl al-Sunnah is that the dead may hear by Allah's permission in specific cases, but this is no basis whatsoever for calling upon them, seeking their aid, or worshipping at graves, all of which is forbidden and a road to shirk.
