Q&A · Women in Islam

May a woman wear gold jewellery and silk clothing?

Yes, gold and silk are lawful for women, though both are forbidden to men. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Gold and silk have been permitted for the females of my Ummah and forbidden to its males." This is why the prohibition of gold rings and silk garments that applies to men does not apply to women, who may adorn themselves with them, especially for their husbands. Adornment should nonetheless remain modest and not be flaunted before non-mahram men, in keeping with the command not to "display their adornment except what is apparent" (Qur'an 24:31).
