Q&A · Marriage & Divorce

What qualities does Islam recommend prioritizing when choosing a spouse?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) described people generally marrying for one of four reasons — wealth, family status, beauty, or religious character — and advised prioritizing religious character and good conduct (din) as the deciding factor, since it is the most reliable predictor of a lasting, respectful, and God-conscious partnership. This does not mean other qualities are irrelevant; compatibility in temperament, kindness, honesty, and mutual attraction all matter and are legitimate considerations, since the Quran describes spouses as a source of tranquility, love, and mercy for one another. Rather, the guidance is about priorities: wealth and lineage fade or fluctuate, and beauty changes with time, but sound character, honesty, and commitment to one's faith and to treating a spouse well tend to sustain a marriage through its harder seasons. Practically, this means looking beyond superficial or purely financial criteria and asking how a prospective spouse treats their parents, handles disagreements, and practices their faith day to day, since these patterns usually carry into married life.
