What is the difference between the Sunnah and a hadith?

A hadith is a report — the transmitted text and chain conveying the Prophet's words, actions, or tacit approvals. The Sunnah is the guided way and practice those reports describe: what the Prophet actually did, commanded, and lived by, which Allah made binding when He said, "Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it" (59:7), and "He does not speak from desire; it is only a revelation revealed" (53:3-4). So a hadith is the vehicle of transmission, while the Sunnah is the guidance it carries — one point of Sunnah may be established by many hadith, and the Sunnah stands as a source of legislation alongside the Quran.
