Q&A · Purification

If I make a full ghusl, do I still need to perform wudu separately before praying?

A complete ghusl performed with the intention of lifting major impurity (janabah) is sufficient for prayer, and you do not need to renew wudu afterward as long as nothing that breaks wudu occurred during or after it. Aisha described the Prophet's ghusl: he washed his hands, then his private parts, then performed wudu as he would for prayer, then poured water over his whole body — after which he prayed without a fresh wudu. The scholars explain that the state of janabah includes the minor impurity, so removing the greater by ghusl removes the lesser along with it. It is only recommended (not obligatory) to begin the ghusl with a wudu as the Prophet did.
