Madhi — the thin, clear fluid emitted with desire but without climax — is impure (najis), yet it does NOT require ghusl; it only breaks wudu and obliges washing it from the body and garment. 'Ali ibn Abi Talib was a man who experienced much madhi and, being shy to ask directly because he was married to the Prophet's daughter, had al-Miqdad ask on his behalf; the Prophet (peace be upon him) answered that he should wash his private part and perform wudu. This is different from mani (semen ejaculated with climax), which does obligate a full ghusl — so the rule is: madhi means wash it off and make wudu, while mani means ghusl.
