What does Islam teach about generosity (sakha) and spending on others?

Generosity is a beloved trait exemplified by the Prophet (peace be upon him), who was described as "the most generous of people, and he was most generous in Ramadan." He taught that giving is superior to receiving: "The upper hand is better than the lower hand," the upper being the one that gives. Allah promises multiplied reward for those who spend for His sake, likening it to a grain that grows into seven ears, each bearing a hundred grains (Quran 2:261). True generosity, however, must be free of showing off and reproach, and begins with those closest to a person, such as family and dependents.
