What does Islam say about honesty and truthfulness?

Truthfulness (sidq) is a core Islamic virtue that shapes a person's ultimate destiny. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that truthfulness leads to righteousness and righteousness leads to Paradise, and a person keeps telling the truth until he is recorded with Allah as a siddiq (truthful one); likewise lying leads to wickedness and to the Fire. Lying is also listed among the signs of hypocrisy, for the Prophet said one of the marks of a hypocrite is that 'when he speaks, he lies.' A believer is therefore required to be honest in speech, dealings, and testimony even when the truth is difficult.
