What does Islam teach about honesty in business and cheating customers?

The Prophet ﷺ once passed his hand into a pile of food, found it wet underneath where the seller had hidden it, and declared, "Whoever cheats us is not one of us." Allah pronounces woe upon those who give short measure — taking full when they buy but shorting others when they sell — a warning against all forms of commercial deception. Islam encourages transparency about defects and honest weights and measures, promising that the truthful, trustworthy merchant will be raised among the prophets, the truthful, and the martyrs.
