Is horse meat halal, and what about donkey meat?

Horse meat is permissible: Jābir reported that on the day of Khaybar the Prophet ﷺ forbade the flesh of domestic donkeys but permitted horse flesh, and Asmāʾ bint Abī Bakr said they slaughtered a horse and ate it in the time of the Prophet ﷺ. Domestic donkey meat, by contrast, is forbidden. There is some ikhtilāf — Imām Abū Ḥanīfah held horse meat to be disliked — but the stronger view of the majority (Shāfiʿī, Ḥanbalī, and others), based on the explicit ḥadīth, is that it is ḥalāl.
