How should a Muslim control anger?

Islam treats controlling anger as a mark of real strength, not weakness. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said the strong person is not the one who overpowers others in wrestling, but the one who controls himself when angry, and when a man asked him repeatedly for advice he simply said, 'Do not become angry.' Practical steps taught by the Sunnah include seeking refuge in Allah from Shaytan, staying silent, and changing one's posture (sitting if standing) to let the anger cool. Allah praises 'those who restrain anger and pardon people,' making the control of anger a path to His love.
