The Prophet ﷺ forbade a person to drink while standing, as Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported, and he even said whoever does so forgetfully should make himself vomit. Yet it is authentically established that the Prophet ﷺ himself drank Zamzam water while standing, so the majority of scholars reconcile the reports by holding that the prohibition is one of dislike (karāhah) and guidance to what is better, not strict forbiddance — the standing instances showing permissibility or a valid excuse such as crowding. In short, drinking seated is the recommended Sunnah, but drinking standing is permitted and not sinful.
